Newport is FAR more expensive than Laguna. In Laguna you can get section 8 housing.

Affordable housing is available throughout OC, even in Newport Beach.

For boat activities, newport beach wins.
and isn't as snobby as some people think. Definitely Old Money Republican (not too many teabaggers)

For an artsy progressive community, Laguna wins.
and Dana Point is nearby for sailing and boating

Wow, I've been away from these boards for a long time!

I think you'll be very happy with Laguna Beach. Starting out renting is definitely the right choice; it gives you options if you find you want to settle in another part of town or even a nearby town after you've gotten to know the place. The schools are very good, and you will definitely like the relaxed, arty atmosphere.

Eh? Low income housing in Newport and Laguna Beach is VERY few and far between. Most of it is only available for seniors and if you do find something you qualify for, you will be on a waiting list for years. Good luck with that.

Moving from a very small preppy private school in NY.
Great small Public education is priority.
Commute is not an issue. Children have no Jewish friends at their school (we are) and we want them to have some. Not that welcome where we are, and looking for a more inviting and welcoming community. We are both creative, love great food and would love an area with culture and a buzz.
Any advice would be so wonderful and so helpful! Thank you!
Hello, yes my vote is Laguna Beach. Great town, great community. However, Aliso Viejo is also amaing and within 5 miles of Laguna Beach.

Hello Jordie67,

When are you moving? My daughter, Samphyre, is British (We are from Devon) and lives in Laguna Beach with her American husband. She is very happy there with not one reservation. I am positive that she would be willing to give you and your family any help she can.

One warning- I moved from NY too, and my kid was in Newport schools.

Coming from NYC area, you will be disappointed with schools. Even the best public schools in OC don't match up with top NYC area public schools.

If you're used to schools like Stuyvesant, Bronx Science or suburban Scarsdale, Great Neck, Greenwich, etc. you will be sorely disappointed with schools like CDM High. The standards in OC are so much lower and only the Asians in OC are really valuing high expections like you see in the NY area.

And with the privates, the difference is even bigger. There are no Ivy League factories out here. There's no school in OC where the average kid has a reasonable chance at a top tier school.
