Since you've got a 5-year-old, I'd suggest you child-proof that pool as much as possible, even if he's learning how to swim. Here in Phoenix, it's mandatory that every new pool be fenced and have a lock. (Yeah, I know they can be ugly, but small children still drown...even with a poolful of adults.) Move chairs away from the fence so he can't climb over. I'd also put an alarm or chime on the door(s) leading to the pool so you know if he's gone out there.

Per termites, I'd try a safer route before bombarding my family with pesticides. Companies offering safer methods include: Ecola Termite, Pacific Coast Termite, Orange Oil Termite Control, and Lady Bugs Environmental Termite & Pest Control.
