Considering apartments by the mall, anyone know if that part of town is good/safe for a family?

The neighborhoods are fairly nice. Not upscale but well-kept, middle class variety. Now, whether being close to the mall brings a different (unwanted) element I don't really know.

Any suggestions on neighborhoods in the area that are more desirable, etc.?

Live there or anywhere in Brea. Placentia and Yorba Linda are also good, generally speaking.

As far as personal safety, you're probably safer in the area than in 90% of the rest of the county.

I would jump at the chance to live in Brea, either downtown or by the mall (that's almost saying the same thing since they are not far apart). I would urge you to go for it if everything else (job, finances, other obligations) can line up.

If you want to stay in brea, the neighborhoods east of the 57 are about as middle America as it gets. Mostly track two story homes but nice, quiet, and conveniently located. There are still areas of open land as well, which gives it a nice feel.

Brea is really nice. I used to live almost within walking distance of the Brea Mall, and within walking distance of the Downtown Brea area. I never felt unsafe. Hardly ever. It's a very safe area imo. Never felt any worries or anything. Not sure how close to the mall you'll be, but generally most of the places in Brea, Fullerton, Placentia, Yorba Linda, etc. are pretty safe. I've never felt unsafe living there. I lived there for about over a year. Now I live in Fullerton and I still feel safe. I'm a young single woman too...if that makes any difference.

I don't really think you have to worry about anywhere in Brea in terms of safety or quality of neighborhood.

Since you are apartment hunting though, I would look up reviews on the apartments if you can find them. When it comes to apartments, I find the apartment management to be more important than the actual neighborhood, as they tend to work like a kind of gated community...except with a lot more people. If the apartment management has a history of negligence...then it won't matter how nice the neighborhood is, and you will want OUT sooner than later.

Lots of Koreans--well it is their town now and still growing Korean residents, so if you have a problem with Koreans, then it will not be the place for you. I know a lady at work is planning to move out of Brea because of it. But that is how some people think.
