Default Yorba Linda

I am currently researching areas in OC for family suburban areas. I found this platform to be informative in some of the areas I have researched.

what's the feedback on Yorba Linda? What is the"feel" of the area? Are there relocators/transplants there? I know the schools are good but they dont have a high school yet...and I know that the development is newer there.

(ok I already know this is a challenge) but normal people, and a reasonably new planned out community with nice amenities...I like new stuff...In fact I like Irvine, but it is still alittle pricey for us to make that move...especially the new housing. How far is would Yorba Linda be to the Irvine area? How would the commute be to downtown? Thanks

Oh and what is the terrain like a.... valley with close in mtns, desert like, or like Simi Valley?

Yorba Linda is nice in places and ess nice in other places. Pretty much like anywhere else. It does tend to get hot there and they do not get any ocean breeze unlike most OC cities. Depending on where you are in Y.L. you might have to travel on the 91 freeway which is a nightmare. It is a bit cheaper than many OC cities, especially the southern cities. Schools are not as good. Subdivisions may not be quite as pristine.

Yorba Linda has more space than some other cities. It has decent mountain views in the winter. Being right in the path between Riverside and OC, it sometimes gets hit a little bit more with smog and Santa Ana winds.

Most OC Cities are pretty much the same. Some are a little hillier, some are closer to the ocean, some are a little wealthier, but the character of most cities is no different than any other. That is why so many people from LA make gross generalizations about OC. A few Cities are different. Santa Ana and old town Orange are like no where else. Fullerton is different downtown. The Balboa Peninsula in the winter is unique. Huntington used to be, but it is quickly becoming like everywhere else.

Yorba Linda is mostly nice. In most places in Y.L. you can wake up there in the morning and you will not be able to tell if you are there, or Irvine, Tustin, etc.

Yeah...being further inland...isnt such a good thing with all the smog and all. Thanks for your feedback. And not having a decent access into downtown isnt good either.

2 of the 3 high schools in YL's district made it onto Newsweek's Top High Schools list, actually--and I attended the one that didn't and received an excellent education with a challenging curriculum, dedicated teachers, and great arts & athletics programs. Yorba Linda High School is scheduled to open Fall 2009, I believe.

There's no real bad part of Yorba Linda, really... there is one street left with a crappy apartment complex, but the one across the street from it upgraded some years ago, so it's only a matter of time. There are older homes, yes--but the 20-year-old homes in my neighborhood are very well-kept and many have been upgraded in the past several years. There's also a 5-ish year old neighborhood behind me that ranged from high-500s to 2mil when it was new (higher now, of course).

I've never noticed much in the way of smog and far less snooty people here because of the smaller town feel and family-oriented atmosphere. The views from the hills behind my house on a clear day are great, too.

As for downtown LA, well, yes, there's the god-forsaken 91, but the 60, 10, and 210 fwys aren't far. If I can ever afford to live in YL on my own and raise my kids here, I will--I love it here.

In other cities near YL... Placentia has plenty more less-desirable areas then Yorba Linda--even Brea's still not done cleaning up, and Anaheim's icky aside from the Hills, but I would still pick North OC over Central. I don't know that I would even want to live in most of South OC, either--maybe closer to the coast, but definitely not anywhere like Coto. South OC has some really beautiful areas, but I hate the 405 almost as much as I hate the 91. My second choice? Fullerton. Troy High School is one of the best public high schools in OC. Crappy band last I saw, but they've got some good sports teams, great academics, and they're right across the street from my alma mater, Cal State Fullerton. ^_^

Either wsay, it's going to depend on what you're looking for and what your deal-breakers are.

Yorba Linda has the highest median income of any city in the US. Probably because it has very few low-income areas to drag down the averages. It is hot compared to coastal areas and if you look at the smog coverage maps you'll find that YL has many more smoggy days.

And once you leave YL to go anywhere you'll be caught up in all the same problems that other SoCal dwellers have to endure.
