You need to check with DMV again.

If the car has been continually registered in California (registration is current and has been paid for the past 3 years) The cost will be about $96
  • County Add-On Amount Orange County $9
  • CA Base DMV Fee (Currently Reg Fee of $46 + CHP Fee of $24) Total $70.00
  • $1.00 Reflective License Plate Amount
  • $20.00 Smog Abatement - If the vehicle is Gas Driven
  • Air basin fee $1
That is assuming your car is so old that it has no value, if it does, calculate the VLF @ .65% of the current book value.

If the vehicle has been registered in another state and that registration is not expired, to re-register it in California will cost a minimum of $96 + $20 out of state registration fee =$106 (plus VLF fees if applicable)

If the car has not been continually registered you will have to pay back fees and fines the cost to register it will be $296 (plus VLF fees if applicable)
  • Original renewal fee ~ $96
  • $100 registration fee penalty.
  • $100 CHP penalty
  • 160% of the VLF due for that year

(Unless your car is 40 years old you need to get a smog check, so figure $50 for that)
