Please, anyone, give a ballpark figure for:

wheat or whole-grain bread (loaf) Wheat- $.89 to $4.19; Whole Grain- $2 to $4.19

gallon of skim milk $4

pound of cheddar cheese (block) $4.49 to $5.49

pound of ground chuck or ground round $2.43 to $4.99

pound of apples $.52 to $1 a piece (didn't give price per pound)

head of lettuce $1.39 to $1.99

10 pound bag of potatoes $3.99 to $8.49

I'd really like to hear what the prices are out there for these items (or any other items you wish to add. I am thorougly confused by the two schools of thoughts that seemingly prevail on these forums regarding the cost of groceries.
Care of Vons website. Hope that helps. Of course there's Wal Mart Supercenters, Sam's Club, Costco who offer lower prices for bulk. Most of the large grocery stores here have club cards that are free to sign up for and can save you in the long run. I have one for Ralphs, Vons, and Albertsons.

Go to Albertsons.com, ralphs.com, vons.com, etc and look them up online.

these prices are the same in chicago except for the eggs. Do you have farmers markets on a regular basis and are they really cheaper? Here, they are very costly.

OC can be snobby. Newport Beach, Laguna Beach can be very superficial. But there are wealthy areas that are not that superficial-where the people are more down to earth (like Villa Park, Anaheim Hills, and Yorba Linda which are actually wealthier than Newport and Laguna). Other parts, like Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington are home to middle and lower middle income families, more of the working class, but they also have crime.

yes, there are farmers markets.. usually weekly, depends on the city though. bellflower has(or had) one, los alamitos does, and im sure other cities do.

also, there is a store called plow boys in huntington/westminster area that specializes in fresh fruits and vegetables. they have very reasonable prices
