I guess you have checked Google's gestimates. It says it should take approximately 32-37 minutes depending upon whether or not you take the tolls, and also avoid the 405 parking lot.

In the AM, NB 5 traffic coming out of San Clemente tends to be slow, but not that slow. Barring an accident, I think you could realistically expect a 35-50 minute commute.

It won't take "hours". It could be an hour on the freeways, but using the toll roads it should be a lot faster. Just add in the cost of daily tolls to your budget. It can also be faster going the back roads, so to speak. It depends on the two specific locations.

Maybe a hour or so each way but depends on the times you commute and if there is a wreck anywhere on the 5 before the beach cities or toll or 405 splits. The problem with SC is that you’re limited to the 5 coming out of SC until you hit the Beach cities/PCH off ramp. After that you have more street options to get a off and back on but depending on where a wreck is everyone else already knows those side roads.
But on a normal day you’re looking at least a 50 minutes average drive. Nice you get past Beach Cities/PCH you’ll have a decent speeds.

The toll roads can run 10/15 bucks a day. They can get expensive. Imo if you can I would live as close to work as I could.
