Actually, there have been a lot of planes crashes either at or near John Wayne. I have no idea how this compares to other airports, but it seems like a lot to me.

There have been 57 plane accidents at or near John Wayne Airport in the last 35 years – Orange County Register

The last major plane accident at John Wayne Airport occurred in 1981, when an Air California 737 carrying 109 people crash-landed and burst into flames while dodging another plane on the runway. No one was killed.

Since 1982, there have been 57 accidents at or around the airport. Of those, 12 were fatal, according to National Transportation Safety Board records. About half occurred while the pilot was approaching the airport, or during landing.

The most recent occurred in June 2012 when a gust of wind during takeoff caused a single-engine Cessna to collide with a taxiway sign, damaging the cabin. The pilot was not injured.

The last fatal crash came in November 2010, when a single-engine Beechcraft Musketeer approaching the airport after a cross-country flight ran out of fuel. The plane crashed in shallow water in Upper Newport Bay, killing the pilot and two passengers.
