OC1017, you would make a great trolling partner with bob-jenkins. Keep in mind though, trolling is against the terms of service for this site.

No trolling here, just the truth (which is more than I can say for you).

Huntington Beach has the largest, longest beach stretch
Laguna Beach - is all around pretty, pretty, pretty
Laguna around Ritz Carlton and the Cove area is also beautiful with a wide, long beach stretch

By far, the beaches near La Jolla are the prettiest beaches. I completely lost interest in all the beaches near OC/LA because they're very plain looking in comparison, plus the booming population has caused a lot of bacterial pollution. La Jolla is amazing with it's sand stone formations if you walk along the shoreline.

They're all pretty much the same. I suppose I like Natural Bridges Park in Santa Cruz, there's a sort of doughnut shaped rock out a few yards into the water. I used to go collect mussels from inside and roast them briefly over a fire.
There's a little tiny beach neaby where you can sometimes see naked women, and Mexicans way up the cliff whistling at them and shouting obscene suggestions. There's a walk/bike path going a couple of miles from the Boardwalk area to Natural Bridges, lots of little niches to explore along the way.
Oh, you said Southern California. Sorry.
The water's generally too cold to comfortably swim in, even way down by San Diego, but yeah I'd agree with La Jolla.

The many small and secluded beaches in Laguna Beach are lovely....but you have to know how to get to them.

Locally in Laguna Beach...West street beach. when you walk down onto it it is large and wide. many times I have seen dolphins playing about. a very nice beach. La Jolla is a beauty of a beach. The beach by the Del Coronado is a nice beach, eith the hotel there and it's history. Also there is an outdoor casual lunch area overlooking it. Nice.

Generally anything from Crystal Cove State Park south is nice. Factor in the time of year. It is not swimming/surfing waether yet but the right now conditions should be clear. Soon the "May Gray" will start followed by the "June Gloom". This is caused by the difference between sea and land temps. When it starts getting warm inland, it takes the ocean a little while to catch up and it does in time for the 4th of July weekend!!! After that conditions are great till October.
