See there's a hard question. I love both areas. I would love to live in LA, but the thing I enjoy about living in OC is that we have the same benefits of Los Angeles (shopping, restaurants, etc...) but get to go home to a laid back, quite area. When you want to go to LA it's just about an hour away. I choose to stay in OC for that reason, but eventually I would like to have a loft in one of the old historic office buildings or warehouses in downtown LA.

LA is very opposite. It is either extremely wealthy or extremely poor; there is almost nothing in the middle. LA has more culture, but it has lost much of its once vibrant culture to its general downturn in recent years.

Costa Mesa is a cool city and great location in Orange County overall. Centrally located for beach fun, and close to the 405 freeway. Plenty of great restaurants, bars, and things to do in the area. After college, my wife and I lived in the Camden apartments right across Orange Coast College and near Harbor Blvd. It was a fun place, and it was easy for us to appreciate all the great things about the city. Driving around we could be at Newport Harbor in 10 minutes, Huntington Pier in 10 minutes, the 405 freeway in 5 minutes, the Orange County fair gounds in 5, South Coast Plaza Mall in 10, and good restaurants within 5-15 minutes. It's overall a great place for single and family life. Homes are older, but nice neighborhoods. I'm not very familiar though with Costa Mesa neighborhoods off of 17th and north though. I know there are some less desirable places in Costa Mesa, but you can easily determine which areas of Costa Mesa to be a part of. My wife and I later moved to Mission Viejo. Our move made more sense since we both work in south county. But we still like Costa Mesa a ton, and are in the area occasionally. We especially like the Marukai asian market, Hi Time Wine Cellars, and Patrick's Pub

Costa MEsa is a great place for singles. But once you have a family, move to Huntington or Irvine.
