Hi Everybody, my wife and I have just inherited a Garden Villa condo in Laguna Woods Village. I'm 71 and she is 60. We are seriously looking to leave Northeast Florida and move to the condo. It's smaller than what we are accustomed to, but we feel we can make due with 1200 sq feet for the 2 of us. We are both active golfers and the cost of golf here in Florida is our biggest discretionary expense, it is costing us about $12000 a year. My concern about LW is the median age, it is a good deal older than, particularly my wifes. Will that be a problem? Are tee times usually available, I play 5 days a week. Are there any issues we should be concerned with or is it going to be the affordable clean place we are hoping for. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Well, it's where Leisure World was(not called that anymore), so you'll be okay, it's not like they're going to kick you out, and the area that surrounds it is nice as well.

Golf can be had all around southern california at any time of the day really. There are expensive and inexpensive courses all over the place in Orange county and if you are a veteran there is a great Navy golf course in Cypress. Pelican Hill in Newport Coast is closeby and very nice. Costa Mesa, Cypress, and Seal Beach(Old Ranch) all have very good country club courses as well.

This website has a pretty robust list of OC golfing.. Golf Courses - Things To Do in Orange County California (http://www.laokay.com/GolfCourses_OrangeCounty.htm - broken link)

Personally, I like to head out to David L Baker and get the earlybird rates at sunrise.

Laguna Woods is a clean and great community for senior citizens if you like living in the retirement development type environment. They have a ton of programs and special events going on for residents all the time. I know that Laguna Woods residents pack charter buses and go out to the Indian casinos like twice a week and have a great time. They have pools and the Laguna Hills Mall is close by. If you can't drive they have a shuttle going around all the time. The majority of the community is older homes, so it may be an older place that what you are used to in Florida. There are a ton of golf courses in Orange County and So Cal. You could probably spend a whole entire year trying out each one!
Fly out though and visit the area before moving. $600 in plane tickets is nothing compared to moving out to an area you haven't even seen and don't even know if you like.

Laguna Wood is a great place to be. You won't have to worry about hurricanes or alligators here. L.W. has more things for the resident to do than a stick to shake. I personally have a number of friends living there and they love it. With apologies to your dear wife and no insult intended, I am not saying there are some trophy wives or young widows in L.G. but, some of the ones I've seen look rather young so your wife should fit right in.

I have lived in Laguna woods for 4 years now we have a lot of boomers starting to move here and a variaty of ages, I dont think that should be a problem, as for golf there are 2 cources. 1 is a 27 hole pro, and a 9 hole par 3. the pro is I believe $11. w/cart and $8.50 without for 18 holes, the par 3 is $4.50 Tee times a usualy available. as for the rest of the community you name it it's there people describe us as a retirement community, and it has a in correct descriptio. it is a community designed for active adults. ie.. art classes and studios, tennes, driving range social clubs, garden centers, theatre, pools, gyms, and yes even bridge and casino trips. we are located 8 miles from Laguna Beach. and spome of the best restaurants in the county. you may only have 1200 sqft, but there is nothing that says you have to be inside much. Hope this helps

I'm bumping this board UP to see if there are any more comments from residents of Laguna Woods Village.

I'm a single female, age 70 ! Would I fit in the LWV lifestyle - or are there mostly couples ?

My wife and I have lived here since 1998. We moved here when I turned 55. We love it. We don't use many of the facilities or programs, but there are more than enough for anyone. The monthlies are a little high....$538, but that gives you cable TV, water, and use of all facilities.

My wife works as a gate guard at gate 10, and I substitute teach at Trabuco Hills HS.

We're from Maine. Our condo is 1000 square feet....2 BR 2 bath. It's all the space we need.

ConeyIsBabe (from Oregon though?), I am thinking of moving to LWV myself...from what I understand, there are a lot of single women there, but not a lot of single men. And of course, plenty of couples. Call the LWV office -- I found them very helpful when I called.

Dirk Bonner...... thanks for the information.

Avalon08..... I've been reading your recent posts about LWV and that's how I found out about it. This is something for me to think about because at the present time, my Oregon Dream Home is off the market. I bought it in 05 at the height of the r/e market and now I am unwilling to sell for less than my purchase price. So, I'll be staying-put for a while and ....... California Dreamin'
