No Mello Roos..

Still think our lower prop taxes affect bus. Services
Bus is not free where we had them, it was VHCOL in the Bay Area. IIRC, it was like $50 a month back in 2000 time frame, I’m sure it’s much more now.
I know Irvine doesn’t have it, my kids had to take regular bus or walk home, but most of the Irvine areas that I’ve been have Mello Roos. It’s either big or small. Like Westpart 1, about $800, Westpart 2, about $2000, Columbus Grove, about $7000.

My first googling shows an article from Orange County Register that Newport Mesa has school bus 2015.

Ahhhh.....I was referring to FREE buses we had back East.....with high prop taxes..

We bought a Irvine home 1978..no Mello Roos....no buses

Have been in Tustin hills past 35 years..no Mello Roos..no buses

Obviously don’t know about Newport..

So I guess when you said in the Bay Area, I missed if you said they were not free!

That is what I call prop taxes affecting education expenses.....buses are included

They were free for me in Fullerton, 1975-1976. But in Irvine they don’t even have bus route, let alone free bus.

Yeah I remember...hubby moved to Irvine 1970 with two young sons...no buses ever..

Luckily their elementary and middle schools were walkable...high school they rode bikes..

These days we plan our shopping trips to avoid school hours..traffic is awful,,,,parents picking up, and the walkers clogging up the busy streets..

When I was in high school..most moms didn’t work..all of my schools were at least 7 miles away..

Times have changed!

They don’t even have cafeteria in Irvine high schools, they built these schools in such as way that they are walkable to restaurants, or supermarkets nearby. That’s where my kids went sometime to get lunch, if we didn’t pack lunch for them.

Prop 13 applies equally to all taxable Real Estate in California and no where does it differentiate due to age.

Prop 13 sets the statewide tax at 1% of fair market value at the time of transfer with a limit of 2% annual inflation factor. Prop does not limited additional assessments with voter approval... 55% for school infrastructure and 2/3 for everything else.

Voters supported Prop 13 in large part due to the State taking over local school funding... it was one thing to pay higher taxes to support local schools and another when local tax dollars went to other districts.

Wow...didn’t know about cafeteria and high schools in Irvine...

Obviously why our streets etc are so busy at lunch time..

But is fast food any worse..or cheaper than cafeteria food..

My mom always packed our lunches

Poor kids get free food in cafeteria, but I guess not in a Irvine. We usually packed lunch for our kids, but on rare occasion we didn’t, then my kids went to these places.

I never said it differentiated by age, I said newer homeowners. But obviously, a young family with children in school who just purchased their home is going to pay way more property taxes than Lola, who purchased her home 50 years ago. And they are the ones hurt by the loss of school bus service, something that is still available to millions of American families all over the country, rich or poor.

As for the schools having no cafeterias, they still had food, the kids just ate outside. At the high school they had stations where the kids could get pizza, burgers, snacks, etc.
