I have been in the Long Beach/Lakewood area for about 20 plus yrs. I can assure you there are great areas of Long Beach and I also delivered mail and worked for the post office for 15 yrs. Bixby Knolls, Belmont Shores, Los Altos, Belmont Heights are all great areas to live and raise a family. Long Beach has so much to offer and is a great city! Heck some rents in downtown near the beach are less than 1000.
Also consider Lakewood which is the neighboring city to Long Beach. Lakewood has good schools and close to everything as well. Some apts in area but mostly SFR. However you can find a 3 bdrm for under $2000. Heck I think you can find a SFR rental for under that. A good site for hidden gems as far as great rentals is Westside Rentals. There is a membership fee but it's worth it cause the landlords on there want top of the line renters. So an owner in Los Altos looking to rent is not going to be on rent dot com, or apartments dot com.
Some of the best zips in Long Beach are 90807, 90808, 90815, 90803, 90814.
Good luck on yr search.

Oh and Los Altos is excellent area. Great family community, close to plenty of shopping, nice parks, very convenient area. No kids here so can't say about schools in that area but I am sure they are going to rank very well.

Long Beach isn't bad. Parts of it are. It is very comparable to Huntington Beach with small homes and lots of apartments as well as being extremely old. Have you tried downtown? It is very trendy and you can get great views from the nice highrises. Not to mention, its cheaper than you would think.

ssahlin is on a distinguished road
California Heights, in Long Beach is a historic tree-lined neighborhood. I lived there for 4 years and took walks every night. :-)
Warmly,
Sharon
