I do not see any indication of prejudice. On what basis do you accuse these people of prejudice?

I do see some gross generalizations (i.e. things werte bad on my street so it is all bad). You cannot make any generalization about a city of this size. Parts are good parts are bad. That is like trying to make a generalization about the entire state of California. It is silly. Not everything is the same. Not everyone is the same. I am not sure whether I mentioned this or not, but in about 1996 Santa Ana was listed as the safest city in its size category in the entire united states. But again, that is a generlaization. Even then Minnie street certainly was not safe. Even at Santa Ana's worst time north Flower street was very safe.

Good point, I am assuming a bit there...though things that a few (not most) people posted in this thread did seem to imply it.

Santa Ana is a very appealing city for Mexicans, but uniquely illegals. It has become a haven for illegals primarily because of Santa Ana's low cost housing. Hence the average occupancy rate of a housing unit is about 4/unit. This is one of the highest rates in the country. For more info on this... search "Santa Ana" on "Wikipedia dot com."

Latino gangs such as the MS 13 are deadly. Most of the homicides are gang-related, but theft and vandalism can happen to anyone, at any time.

Some areas of the city are very nice. However, I advise your friends to practice caution in all parts.

Welll I don't think it is too bad. I do sometimes wonder if I the car driving really slow behind is planning a random drive by, but I haven't really seen anything all that bad when it comes to violence. There is still plenty of poverty but that is the worst of what I have seen.

No not like this. I have been working in Santa Ana from past couple of years but never found such difficulties.

Don't worry. Everything will be fine.

"You have to learn to be careful and stay out of the bad areas. It is not horrid. When we moved there in 1996 it was rated the safest city in America for Cities of its size group in US News & World Report."

Which only goes to show that the media doesn't know what's talking about. Even back in the 1970's, when it had fewer gangs than it does now and wasn't so extensively rundown, Santa Ana, especially south of 17th St,, was a place to be avoided.

The problem isn't Mexicans per se, who are largely decent people. But the extent of the gang problem and the crime they bring with them is what has really killed the city and the poverty attendant to an extreme influx of illegal aliens that results in rundown neighborhoods only adds to its bad public image. I don't know why hispanic kids are so drawn to gangs, but you have to admit that predisposition does the image of that ethnic group no favors. If the gangs disappeared from Santa Ana tomorrow, the image of the city would improve by leaps and bounds and more folks would be willing to invest in it.

I will give you that nowhere in Santa Ana is it as bad as areas of Inglewood or other areas of L.A. i have been too such as Panorama City, but that don't make Santa Ana a garden spot, either.

As for the city of Orange, the person who had problems must of lived in West Orange, were most of the gang problems and drug related crime occurs. That actually wasn't totally bad in the 1970's, but again, the illegal influx into that city is resulting in exploding crime (relative to what it used to be) and a slow death for that town just as the same vector has pretty much taken Garden Grove and Anaheim from fairly decent working class communities into the dumper.

I am in Santa Ana right now. I do not feel unsafe.

Last night I walked through the neighborhood, sat on the curb and talked with some old frineds for an hour or so, went to dinner in santa ana (at a decent diner called fantastic cafe) went back to my room and slept with no problems. I did not see a single gangbanger, hear a gunshot or a police siren, feel uncofmortable, get threatened, glared at or yelled at. A lot of people said "Hi" or "Hola" when I walkked by them, that is about it. The most threatening thig that i saw was a guy talking on his cell phone in the dark. Now that is scary.

Sure there are probably gangbangers around somewhere, but the problem is not all pervasive. Hundreds of thousands of people live in Santa Ana their while lives and never encounter any criminal activity at all.

It is not perfect, but it is a perfectly fine place to live. Just bring your common sense, maybe a little street smarts and lock your car and your house, just like you would anywhere in Orange County.

By the way the rating safest city in the us was from the FBI statistics, not from the media. Funny how this report ranks irvine as the safest city everyone says "Whoo hoo look how great Irvine is" but when the same report ranked Santa Ana as the safest city people say "Something is wrong with that report"
