That's what the news reported last evening. Has this happened before? Earthquakes, yes; wildfires, yes. Now twisters?!!

It has happened before. At least twice in the past 20 years that I can remember.

There have been a few since the 90's. Anaheim Hills had one off Santa Ana Canyon, and Huntington Beach had one. Most tornado activity is centered in the IE here though.

When we lived in Irvine I remember a couple of suspected tornados. I don't know if they were ever confirmed. We had several water spouts of the coast over the years. I saw the pictures of the tornado in the OC Register. In TX we would just call that a little dust devil, nothing to worry about.

What is this?
A tornado funnel touches down in Riverside, Calif. on Thursday, May 22,2008. A wild weather system lashed Southern California on Thursday with fierce thunderstorms that unleashed mudslides in wildfire-scarred canyons, spawned at least one tornado and dusted mountains and even low-lying communities with snow and hail.

Kind of funny how we have an earthquake over here in WI, about a month ago. Then a little later you guys have a tornado.

Anywhere, anytime
Therotically bad weather can happen anywhere. NYC can get a earthquake, SoCal can get a twister. No one place is immune to bad weather of any kind. Obviously certain areas are prone to certain systems i.e Florida for hurricanes but with that said we could get a Tsunami or a quake or a cyclone in any region. On the bright side that doesn't mean it will happen.
