Emigrating to California
Hi there,
I'm hoping someone on this forum can help.
My Husband and I are currently living in the UK and are sick of it. So we've decided to look into moving aboard.
I have an Aunt who lives in Laguna Niguel who loved from the uk over 30 years ago and hasn’t looked back since so California can't be a too bader place to live.
Can anyone give me some info on:
Where to start I.E. Entry requirements etc
Salary over there
House prices buy and rented
best places to live
School information (I've 2 daughters)
All help would be appreciated

What line of work are you in?
What is your budget for housing? Rent or buy?
Housing information is available from innumerable real estate databases, start with REALTOR.com - Real Estate Listings & Homes For Sale
How old are your daughters? Primary and secondary school information is available on California School Performance Maps
What does "best places to live" mean?

Hi,
I'm in administration, my husband is good with pc's but no qualification on paper.
We currently rent as for buying it'd all depend on a mortgage we could get. we have bad credit in the uk so not sure how it'd effect things.
My daughters are 5 yrs and 1 yr.
Best place as in not a rough dive where were likely to get hurt or robbed, just somewhere were we could be settled, not the higher priced end but not the sh*t hole if you get what I mean.
thanks for your help.

The best idea would be to work on your credit. There are some places that won't check your credit when you move in, but they are few and far between. I know it was difficult for my ex girlfriend's parent's move when they came from Watford England, but they made it happen. You can find more affordable housing in North Orange County, or also look into the Inland Empire for more affordable housing.
Getting something on paper would really help your husband. You could even come and he could go through the 18 month course to become certified to work with computers. Whatever you can do to make your CVs and your credit scores more appealing will help!!

My wife has almost pursuaded me to move to California from Windsor, England, but it is no easy decision. Have you visited California? There are many lovely areas but they are equally as expensive as England relative to income.
You do not want to live away from the coast in my opinion. You would not see the benefit of moving for that. Also, the US is one of the toughest countries to emmigrate to legally, and so you will need good qualifications in your field, or study there first and apply for employment.

Your chances of immigrating are slim. From your comments about your situation it would seem that you don't have access to the capital required for a visa to start your own business (which is fraught with other disadvantages so let's not go there). Neither of you seem to have the experience nor qualifications to enable a US employer to sponsor you (there are strict specifications around this - and even if you did, the competition is fierce and visa numbers are very limited), and you are married to each other so the marry-an-American route is out.
Which leaves getting employed by a company in the UK that also has offices in the US and then getting transferred over - in which case beggars can't be choosers and you'd be wise to go for anything that could potentially get you anywhere in the US rather than try to aim just for CA. This route - however much of a long shot - is actually the best one too as it's one of the only that can easily lead to Permanent Residency (and ultimately citizenship if that floats your boat) - so you could move to CA sometime further down the line.
Have a look at this and come back with any specific questions:
Pulaski's Ways: How to Live and Work in the USA : British Expat Wiki
I wouldn't worry too much about house prices etc. at this point if I were you.
