Let me say I agree with the other posters who mentioned East Long Beach and Los Alamitos. Since you have a 10 yr old, stay away from Torrance and Carson, and any other Los Angeles county city near Carson for that matter. You don't want your child going to school there. East LB is the only LA city you should consider moving to. Better yet, rent an apartment in Orange County in the cities of either Los Alamitos or Seal Beach. Both have top notch schools, very nice neighborhoods, and should fit your budget of $2000 - $3000 for apartment rental. Plus, both are perhaps a 35 minute (depending on what time) commute to Carson. Its worth the extra drive to ensure you're in a good neighborhood, and that your child goes to a good school.
