As others have already said, the easiest and most reliable thing to is head east over the mountains into the desert.

You can try the less populated parts of OC on the coast south of Mission Viejo but that's iffy - you might get away from the light population but coast mist/moisture in the air could interfere.

You have to get really far from the LA basin to see much as far as stars. Light pollution and gaseous pollutions plus haze make this area one of the worst places for star watching anywhere. Sometimes you can see clearly from Catalina Island.
Otherwise, get over the mountains at least.
