Hi.

I'm 18 (nearly 19) and currently living in England. I am really exploring the idea of moving out to California (namely Orange County).

Being my age I watch the OC and instantly think I want to live in Newport Beach/Laguna Beach. But I know this is not a realistic idea. I am well off but I don't think I could afford to rent in one of those places until I got on my feet over there.

I am currently studying towards an Accounting qualification over here and I would like to know which places in Orange County would be good for me to start a career in Accounting/banking etc. But at the same time I would like to be close to Newport/Laguna so I can spend time in those places.

I need good shops (designer like Ralph Lauren etc.), good music scene and good places to eat and go out to.

I have around $1000-1500 a month to spend on rent for the first few months till I get on my feet. Could i get decent 1/2 bed apartment/flat for that kind of money?

Please give me some guidance

The major accounting firms have their Orange County offices near John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Irvine. You'll need at least a BA in accounting to work there. South Coast plaza is about 10 minutes up the 405 freeway from there and has all the high-end shopping you could want. $1200-1500/mo rents a 1 bedroom apartment or a low-end 2 bedroom but not in Newport or Laguna. Honestly, OC is not the place for a 19 year old with no formal education or job skills to get their start unless your parents are going to support you from 8,000 miles away.

There is no recession (or traffic or ugly people or old cars) on The OC TV show.

CSU Fullerton has a great Accounting program--and the CSU system is much more affordable than the UC. CSU Fullerton's located in North OC (College of Business and Economics; California State University, Fullerton), and UC Irvine (UC Irvine | The Paul Merage School of Business (http://www.merage.uci.edu/UndergraduatePrograms/index.aspx - broken link)) is located in Central/South OC. I went to CSU Fullerton as a Finance major--and their Accounting program is tops.

Most of big business is in Irvine and Costa Mesa, but if you come to study at one of our universities, you should see about getting an internship--maybe the company will hire you right out of school. Good luck!

Come to Orange County. But don't live alone. You can probably pay $800/month to live with a roommate. At your age, you should live in Huntington Beach or Costa Mesa. If you want to live in Newport, live on the west side of the bay, it's cheaper.
