Question Brownish sky of 2008

Is there anyone who would explain brownish - reddish sky -events that were taking place during april-july of 2008 in OC? Some people say this is because of LA roads but I do not think it is true. What I am thinking is a sand from the desert that were moved by santa ana winds. Brownish sky is visible if you look to the South from OC. However, if you look north the sky is clear where LA is. I think that brownish sky is not a product of smog but the sand from the desert. Am I right or not? How to test this theory? May be it has something to do with the humidity in the atmosphere? It has been very dry during 2007 and now the hottest 2008 came. Also the question: is the brownish sky everywhere in southern california? Is it brown in Carlsbad?

Smog can mean different things. The water vapor is also smog. I do not like this. The brown sky, is it water, dust, sand, or CO2, or anything else?

Water vapor is not smog although it can give a hazy quality to the sky. Its not brown. C02 is an invisible gas. If its brown, its either smog or smoke for a wild fire.

Go to the mountain tops and look at it, it is a thick layer of good ole smog, rust color. It was really bad yesterday.

It could be ozone. http://cfpub.epa.gov/airnow/index.cf...isplaymaps#map
But the source is not the pollution. If you look at Aug'1, 2008 you will see that the epicenter is near Perris which does not have any pollution.
What city is it on the picture?

it was actually pretty clear in LA yesterday.

btw, the picture looks to be focused on century city in west LA with the santa monica mountains as the backdrop.
