In all fairness (and as outlined in the terms of service), these kinds of questions can be answered by simply using any of the common real estate tools like realtor.com, google real estate, yahoo, etc. City Data forum is more to help folks read in between the lines.

YEs you can. You can get a nice used 3 bedroom R.V. for about $80,000 to $120,000. Then you just have to find somewhere to park it. Maybe you can move from mall to mall and just live in the parking lots.

I laughed when I read this question, but then I noticed that the OP asked the exact same question in a number of other subforums. There aren't many places where you can find a home that meets your criteria, unless you're talking about living in the middle of nowhere. Generally speaking, my impression is that more expensive areas = less crime, because the income requirement weeds out the lower income people, and crimes are often committed by lower-income people. This doesn't mean that all lower-income people are criminals, just that a lot of criminals happen to be low-income.

Nope. You may find a small, one car garage in the worst part of Santa Ana...! No kidding, honestly.

Let me explain...
To those who are giving valuable and honest opinions, thank you. The truth of the matter is that I live in Cape Town South Africa and have decided it's time to halt any further property investment here.
I now wish to to buy a (first of hopefully a few) overseas properties of which the USA is no1. on my list.
For this reason, I have traveled to the USA more than 3 times the last 6 months, and have been STUDYING AND RESEARCHING the property market for more than 8 months. Now, part of my research is through forums like these where you have to ask questions that may seem mad to others, and sort of try to get a bigger picture through other people's opinions and posts as I cannot visit ALL the US states, cities and towns, hence the same post on different forums.
What then becomes very frustrating is when members outrightly post rude comments which really isn't helping me at all.
Someone even suggested that this forum is not for what I am using it, and that I should contact a realtor. Truth is that this site helps me to verify claims made by some realtors. If you had to buy a property in a different country but couldn't stay there for a long while you would probably understand what the value of this website is to FN's.
NOW: I do not perticularly care where in the USA I buy my first property. Currently, I'm looking more towards Florida simply because I've been there a few times recently and will be there in 3 weeks time again.
I just want to buy a place to lock up and leave until my next visit. I am not looking to relocate and I do not need to rent the property out.
The property should however be in a good neighbourhood, 3/2 and of course, low crime and under $120 000. Also as mentioned before my bank will not do short term rental as I am on a FN program.
Some posts suggested that it was impossible 'anywhere in the USA' but I found recently built residential homes in Punta Gorda FL for less than my budget, 3/2 with double garage etc.
Any suggestions or tips wil be highly appreciated.

So, you know what you can get for what prices these properties cost because you have performed the up front research. The other qualification was low crime. There are numerous crime maps available online however people on this forum can provide finely tuned assessments of the safety of provided neighborhoods.
With that, what neighborhoods in Orange County have you found 3+2s for $120K? Once these are provided by you, the forum can comment on the safety.

vegasboy - thanks for clarifying what you are looking for. There are many towns across the US that are safe and have 3/2 homes in that price range. You may want to look in other southern states besides Florida (there are issues there with higher taxes and insurance because of the recent hurricanes) or look north to MI, OH or KY. If you want to avoid crime, in many cases it is better to look at the smaller towns that surround a larger city.
True, you can't get a home in this price range in CA, but I just checked my zip code in SC and found 47 homes 3/2 from $50,000-$120,000. Good luck with your search!

You can...but not in Orange county. A friend of mine was just telling me about how badly the housing market has dropped in the Lancaster area/Lake Los Angeles. He said houses that were going for $240,000 are now $120,000. I have no clue about the crime rate---it's pretty rural out there so probably not a lot of crime but probably not a lot of anything to be honest!
