#1 likely cause: misread (happens more than you'd think)

#2 cause: leaky refrigerator seal or some other appliance i.e. bad water heater running or drawing more power than it should.

#3 likely cause: someone tapped into your power and was using it illegally

when I lived in Costa Mesa I once got a bill for 2-3x what our normal bill was, and like you we never really used the A/C. misread of course, just as I suspected... they corrected it, not SUPER fast, but they did it. the problem is they don't come back out right away to read it again and I couldn't find the meter at our apt to check it myself.

Default they are lying

first of all i would ask your friends to physically show you the bill that is impossible. we live in california are you kidding me, I am surprised your bill is only that much. I know exactly how you feel. I dont run my heat except in the morning when I get up because it is too cold, then turn off and anyone at home during the day wears sweatshirts inside the house, we use blankets at night while watching tv. cant afford the wood for fireplace. in the summer same thing we never use the air only fans. a few times I couldnt take it and used the air. I monitoried it and ran it for exactly one week and my bill was 220.00, when i dont use it my bill averages 100 to 110. gas is around 50 a month. I have a 1290 sq foot two story place. the bill your friends were refering to had to be the gas bill tell them you want to see their electric bill not gas
