What's the perfect California town?
I am seriously considering a move to California next year or early 2010. I have been all up and down the coast researching areas that would appeal to me. I think I want the best of both worlds, but am quickly realizing it's a dream. I want to be near the coast, not a lot of traffic, reasonably priced, (for california, anyway) diversity, low crime, not too "city" and things to do. I know, crazy, right? So far, the central coast (San Luis Obispo area) has met almost all these requirements, but seems boring, scarcely populated and lots of students or retirees.
I was wondering if a working professional, bi-racial registered nurse would be completely out of place in Orange County? I keep hearing how republican, white, rich and racist it all is. Is this that true? I would only be making about 80k a year, single, no kids, 30 something. I am very active in my church, and don't smoke, do drugs, drink or party. I live a pretty conservative life, and am not looking to buy any time soon. I am coming from North Carolina, but lived for a short time Sacramento in 2004. Hated it!
Help me find my perfect California town!!

RN's do quite well in California [thanks, in part, to a powerful union]. San Clemente is really nice without being overly expensive but any town along the coast is pricey. Orange county really isn't racist and Republicans in California are not like Republicans in the South, for the most part.

Have you applied to any jobs? Are they hiring?

Costa Mesa is very mixed racially. It is home of the South Coast Plaza, it is close to both Huntington Beach and Newport Beach but still close to inland amentities like The Irvine Spectrum and Angel Stadium. It might be pretty close to what your looking for.
And OC is not "racist" as a whole, so I dont know where you hear that from. Yes it is VERY republican, but you may just need to deal with that.

The OC can be a bit sketchy at times...I am of mixed heritage as well, so I understand where you are coming from. To me, Huntington Beach or maybe San Diego are great places to live. Not too fast paced. There is always something to do out there
