Since leaving upstate NY for the Peace Corps 20 years ago, I've lived (and married) overseas ever since and finally plan to return to the US this year. My parents recently moved to Huntington Beach, so we'll look there for neighborhoods (under 800K). We would like to be within 1 mile of the coast and be in a family friendly neibhborhood (2 girls under 11). I understand all the schools are good in this area. I've focused my search on family neighborhoods where the kids can roam free, but upon reviewing other threads perhaps I need to also consider a neighborhood's "open mindedness" - my husband is Pakistani. In the expat circle that I'm use to, mixed marriage is a non-issue, but it sounds like we may run into racism or worse my girls. Is there a HB neighborhood that can be considered family friendly, down-to-earth and progressive? Appreciate your thoughts. Oh, and while I have your attention would the Lake Park area of downtown be a good place for kids (I love the old cottage homes)?
