Is there any good ghost towns near by??
I've heard that there are dozens of ghost towns in southern Cal, some completely abandoned, some being operated by non-profits. Does anyone know where a good one is semi-close to OC? I imagine there are several that are used for filming locations. I thought it might be kind of interesting.

At the rate things are going, there will be ghost towns in the Inland Empire very soon, right next door to OC. And I'm not referring to the Old West ghost town of Calico, either.
Not to mention that there are mid 20th century "ghost towns" in the Salton Sea area as a result of that major real estate scam. That's driving distance from OC.
However, I realize you're talking about Old West ghost towns, not Salton City or the ghost towns in the making produced by the foreclosure epidemic. In that case, Calico would be the closest to OC.

Your going to be hard pressed to find anything "close" in your definition to OC. Most of the ghost towns are located on the desert fringe in Riverside/San Bernardino. Calico is probably the closest. You are not going to find something that will take under an hour to get to from OC.

ok, well, thanks anyways. I will go some time, just can't do it when I had hoped. Seems kind of interesting. I also should get a more reliable car if I am to be tooling around the desert

This site lets you search by county: Ghost Towns of California
Nothing in OC though.
The closest ones are all probably an hour or more away. Let me know if you find any good ones, I'm into that stuff too! Have been wanting to go to Salton Sea for awhile too...someone mentioned that above.

There are two in L.A. County that look reasonably close to OC: Eldoradoville and Orchard Camp.
San Bernardino County is full of Old West ghost towns, Lytle Creek and Agua Mansa look reasonably close to OC. Calico (which I mentioned earlier in the thread) is near Barstow and thus a long way from OC.
Riverside County has five, although they're near Indio and Blythe and thus not so close to OC.
San Diego's four ghost towns are in East County and thus not close to OC.

I don't understand why you say the is nothing close. Barstow is an hour and a half from OC, so are most of the others you mentioned. To me, that's very close to OC.

REGION: Economy cools population growth : North County Times - Californian 04-30-2009
Southwest Riverside County and Riverside continue to grow...No comment on the high desert though where they are bulldozing vacant homes.
