Kalispell is near some beautiful scenery but has a very high concentration of sex offenders for some odd reason.

Interesting thread!
Born and raised in SE Michigan but I lived in Fullerton for a few years back in the mid 80s. I was young and naive so I left chasing a girl who was also from my hometown in MI. I caught her but she wiggled free after about 2 years. After that I decided pretty quickly that OC was no place for me to put down roots (even though I had a great time and enjoyed living in the area.) I could never foresee starting and raising a family in OC. So back to MI it was for me. I also lived for a short while in Georgia, and Kentucky while in the army). I Lived in several Detroit suburbs, including Royal Oak, and Canton, and then in a Suburb of Toledo, Ohio for about 12 years. Primarily due to economic reasons we now live in North TX, DFW metroplex and have for about the last 2 years. My wife is from the UK she moved to the states in 1968. Lived in Milwaukee. North Chicago Suburbs, Canton, MI and Suburb of Toledo. (on the MI side of the state line) Of all the places we've lived the greater Toledo area has been our favorite. Still getting used to North Texas and it's where our opportunities are now so - here we are making the best of it- so be it! My teen age kids love it here in TX.
BTW - Milwaukee was also a close 2nd in terms of favorites for my wife. Today if you asked me where I'd like to live I'd probably say hands down Michigan from June 1st to the end of October. And then somewhere in Texas or another warm weather climate the rest of the time. If I had the money and no kids and no worries then I think the OC environment would suite me and for a short two year period of my life in the mid 80s when they were electing people like B1- Bob it was a fun place to be!.

I have lived in Southern California almost all of my life (54) and Orange County mainly Irvine since the early 1990s. To me this "diamond has lost its luster" not just orange county but all of Southern Cal.
We moved to Irvine around 1992 and it just wasnt like it is now. The population and traffic has steadily climbed making it hard just to drive from one side of Irvine to the other. I have noticed shopping areas completely taken over by ethnic groups. Guess what happened to Irvine Pizza that used to be at Walnut and Jeffrey? Pretty sad.....
Anyway I have traveled many areas of the country including Lousiville, KY,
Tucson, AZ and Las Vegas, NV.
I really like Louisville............no traffic but too many tornadoes.
Tucson is Ok but I think I like Las Vegas better.
Just waiting for my kids to finish school and then bye bye...........

Excellent advice. Perhaps you should follow it yourself and not bash Dallas.

We cannot leave for a few years due to my husband's pending retirement (although I am 10 yrs younger and will continue working). We are just starting our search for the best place to raise our two toddlers. Although I would love to move back east, my husband is wary of moving too far east. We are currently considering... Austin, TX; Houston, TX; Colorado Springs, CO; Denver (suburbs), CO. We may even look north to Oregon and Washington... but the rain may be a bit too gloomy for us.

LOL....I grew up in Alaska. I think I can handle it. Cold weather beats putting up with all the crap that comes with living in SoCal.

You could have the worst of both worlds though.
Hypothetically, a person moving from Southern California could have a pretty big down payment and/or income. When he moves to a super cold place, he's probably moving into one of the wealthier neighborhoods. In wealthy neighborhoods normally live wealthy people. A lot of the "crap" people complain about in Southern California (materialism, no time for neighborliness, vanity, etc) could also be in those wealthy neighborhoods.
So, what does that mean? You go from a warm, sunny, neighborhood with undesirable neighbors to a cold, windy neighborhood with undesirable neighbors.
