Skyward,
Don't visit my thread anymore if you don't like what I have to say or the title of it. Nobody made you read the posts on my thread. This is a free country and actually people have thanked me for the honesty and I have recieved a lot of personal comments with people who have agreed with what I had to say. In all the cities on this forum there are good and bad issues talked about. That is what this City Data forum is all about. The reality, truth, experience, whatever you want to call the posts written by thousands of people who have walked the sidewalks, shopped, lived, went to the beach, etc of hundreds of places that people want to know about. People who have never been there. Hopefully the people who are searching for areas to live will take all the comments and experiences together and form a picture of what the place is all about. As I mentioned in another thread.. I am sorry if the title of my thread bothers you. It is what I wanted to name it because I was reading a lot of things that left the truth out... There was a candy-coated image being portrayed and I was concerned about the people getting a half-baked image of OC. I have the right to respond when I have lived there and have friends and relatives that still do. Every week I hear the complaints from at least one of them. Just let me be me.. quite gripping about it and post your own threads. Get over it pleeeease!!! You are really starting to bug me and I think other people as well.

OC is going downhill, fast! It has changed so much, even within the past 10 years.

We moved to Michigan for family reasons and to find a better place to raise our kids.
Overall it is not better than OC just different. There are positives and negatives. It is definetly a more wholsome place to raise children. not so materialsitic. Better schools. Better health care. cleaner and more open. Less rushed and harried. No question that this was the right move as far as the kids go. However for me personally, OC was more fun to live in. On the other hand my wife likes Michigan better.

The urban portions of California cater to adult fantasies and wants, and tend to downplay family values and child rearing. Yeah, broad brush ... but mostly true.

Child rearing comes down to what kind of job the family does. You can do a great job anywhere or a poor job anywhere. Case in point: Where is the greatest concentration of meth abuse occuring? Hint: It ain't big cities in California. I never really got the whole "family-oriented" or not family oriented distinctions of places. Family-oriented comes down to each individual family IMO.

This is a huge, legitimate reason that a lot of people may underestimate.

I agree and disagree. I think it makes it easier to live in a place that generally shares the same priorities and values that you do. But in the end, it primarily comes down to what we model at home. Its just not wise to discount the effects of the political, social, economic and religious climate that a town has to offer. Once kids start seeking out independence, the voice of their peers is just as loud as the actions of their parents. Since you never really know which one your child is going to be led by, it helps to surround your family with as much of your core values as possible.

As a life long socal resident born in san gabriel and living in anaheim hills/ tustin/ orange the last 30 years I can tell you that meth crack lsd etc are available to your kids no matter what school they go to or how they were raised. The only difference is in the "wealthier" areas the ones that get disciplined are those with poor grades. As a father to an honor roll student that i found out was selling and using drugs and promptly pulled him out of school and put him to work (under constant supervision). I can tell you all his friends that got bad grades where sent to continuation school and all the kids including his supplier that got good grades were ignored as long as they didnt make it to obvious.
Socal public schools are little more them political money dumps.
