Hello all,

I am going to Temecula (just south of LA) for a vacation trip and was hoping that I can get some advice on a technical issue. I live in Nevada and bought a car with tinted windows (go figure, it is perfectly legal here). I don't know the exact VLT, but they don't really look THAT dark. I heard that in California you can get pulled over if your driver and passenger windows are tinted. The questions that I had were:
*Are the cops really that bad? Should I untint my windows before I go?
*Also, if I get pulled over, is it still a "fix-it" ticket? I heard that some people were getting actual fines and
*What impact would a tint ticket have on my car insurance?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It's a fix a ticket and it wont hurt your insurance. As far as your windows it's pretty much your call. I have tinted windows all around but it's not really dark and no cop has ever said anything to me when I was in Ca. Now if you have some kind of limo tint in your front windows that's going to be a major issue.

As long as your car doesnt look like a street racer or something they usually wont bother you. I was pulled over in my grandparents SUV with tinted front side windows for another issue and the officer mentioned it but did not ticket me

It's a fix it ticket.

No impact on your insurance.

Whether or not you will get pulled over depends on the car you drive, what you look like, how dark the tint is, and what municipality you happen to be driving through.

I had a 1999 ford escort with fronts tinted medium and the rears tinted dark. I lived in San Gabriel Valley(most cities patrolled by Sheriffs Department) and was never once pulled over.

I have a black Infiniti G35 Coupe with dark tint all around. I've been cited 3 times in six years. I live in Los Angeles now. CHP cited me twice and LAPD once. I've also been pulled over by sheriffs in a very bad area, just wanting to know who I was. They did not cite me.

Check out some of my post on speeding tickets and how to beat them , the same advice and process works if you do get a ticket here in California. Very easy to beat the ticket if nits not just a repair ticket although I really don't think they will bother with you because the car is registered in Nevada. its not illegal in that state , their law will superceed the california laws.

I can't imagine you would get a ticket if your car is registered in Nevada and you are just on vacation...... But yes, dark, tinted windows are not allowed in CA, but just how dark, I don't know.

Off topic: In Old Town, for authentic Mexican, try Rosie's Cantina..cheap eats, order-at-the-counter-type-of-place, good food......there is also a neat cowboy steak place in Old Town where you pick it out and cook it or they do it for you.. If you want me to get the name of it, lemme know.

I have a car bought from a dealership in Scottsdale, AZ and the windows are tinted "standard" AZ dark. And they are really dark. Have made many trips to various places in So Cal and have never had a problems. I was told it was because the car has AZ plates.

(If the windows were this dark in a CA registered car I would be pulled over.)
