hi all, can someone please tell me what happens if you are renting a house that is already in default? do we lose our move in money, and the money we have already paid for rent?

Your deposit money should be returned as would any deposit .As to rent money already used it will not be returned just because the house is in defalt BUT when the court does an unlawful detainer action on the owner , you as a tenant will be given 60 days to vacate , whereas the owner would have been given about 5 days . so you will make out in that way . free rent ! 2 months.

Don't rent a house in default. Sometimes the home goes back to the bank but the former owner will still rent it to you. Also some scammers will break into a foreclosed home, change the locks and rent it out as if it were their own.
