Do you think a couple without kids would feel like an oddity there? We could get a golden retriever . But I am not much for screaming children, just lounging in my backyard pool contemplating my navel. Can't stand noise, so wonder about children when thinking of MV or anywhere in OC. Thoughts anyone on best area for quiet and luxurious? Oh yeah and close to lots of golf, workout areas, jogging trails etc?

Hi Twinsfan,
I assume you are from Minnesota! My sister moved to Minnesota from here because her husband is a Northwest Airlines pilot, but the weather was to much for her and they are in Hawaii now (talk about a change).
Do you know which Mission Viejo high school you will be at??? Mission Viejo, Capistrano Valley, or Trabuco Hills High School???- If you don't know, give me your neighborhood or cross street and I can tell you.
-Each high school has a little different flavor and I can get real specific with you if you know which school you will be at. Most student's could care less if you are from the Midwest.
OK, good start.
MVHS is a very nice public high school and it is a good thing that the school is overwhelmingly middle class. In general, kids at MVHS are more humble and don't expect everything on a silver spoon. The kids work jobs at local stores like Cold Stone Ice Cream, Subway, Chick's Sporting Goods, Best Buy, etc... so they aren't spoiled kids that have everything given to them and have an attitude toward you for being from the Midwest.
You will find a lot of school spirit at MVHS. Their football team is one of the best in the state so they have reason to get excited, and their basketball, swimming, track, tennis, etc... programs are all very good. It can be very competitive for the sports requiring tryouts though. The Model United Nations is well known also at MVHS. If you get involved with clubs and stuff you should get plugged in and meet new people in a setting other than the classroom. Almost forgot, the band is very good also and has won some very prestigious tournaments.
Academically MVHS is one of the best public schools in Orange County. AP and IB programs are strong and have high pass rates. Lots of students go on to prestigious schools and some notable people like soccer star Julie Foudy and other Olympic medalist are from the high school.
-My kids are at Capistrano Valley, but I hear nothing but great things about MVHS and the MVHS kids that work at Mission Viejo stores are very nice and polite. It is good to see young people working if they have the time (some students have too much homework nowadays). Mission Viejo culture is different than some of our yuppier neighbors like Coto de Caza and a lot more laid back. Just be outgoing and you should do well. Crawl up in a shell and hide and things might go bad.
-Also, drugs are at every high school in this county, and even country. I would not say MVHS or any Mission Viejo school has a major problem with it, but it is there. Kids with parents that aren't aware get involved, but it is a small percentage of the overall student body. The vast majority of kids are pretty good. Just stay away from that stuff.
I encourage you to read the reviews at greatschools.com. It should encourage you to see all the good things parents and students have to say about the school. Honestly, if there was a high school to move to fromt he Midwest in this county, MVHS is one of the best: Parent Reviews of Mission Viejo High School - Mission Viejo, California - CA
what about the cliques and different groups of people and how will that effect my ability to make new friends?
There are a ton of kids that don't fit any single group. The kids are just friends and don't really fit any "category." One kid in the group may be a baseball player, the other a piano player, and the other is a cross country runner, etc...." Then there will be groups from sports. Cross Country kids together, football kids, basketball, baseball, etc...... There will be kids that are serious about school and hang out together, kids that play instruments that hang out together, kids that are in IB program, kids that are part of Multicultural club, etc... and hang out together.
The first couple days will likely be odd. My son came from private school and when he started as a freshman at a public high school he knew maybe 20 people. He felt really lost in a sea of faces he didn't know and all the other kids had gone to middle school together so already had friends, but eventually he just started making friends and in about two weeks he didn't feel so scared anymore.
-Starting at a new school anywhere is going to be hard. It would be hard to switch schools in the same city, let alone across the country. You will eventually get to meet some people and just ask where they eat at lunch or something and if you can join them. The people that you get a vibe from as potential friends are the ones to ask to eat lunch with. I volunteer at my kids' school a lot so I see lunch dynamics and stuff. Just be brave and eventually you should do fine. Don't expect it to be a walk in the park though, you have to work at making friends.
but overall the kids are laid back and easy going? and i guess i would just like to know what you think the major problems are at the school such as drugs, alcohol, and that type of stuff.

In general, pretty laid back. These are large high schools with around 3,000 kids here so there is a very diverse mix of interests and hobbies. There is no stereotype simply because there are so many kids. Some kids are really uptight about their sports and some take school very seriously. You will pretty much find everything. The city passed an ordinance that makes parent's responsible and able to be fined heavily for kids who drink at homes. Alcohol parties can happen at private homes, but if you choose good friends, you won't get involved with them. You can usually tell the type of kids doing drugs also. They don't care about anything and I don't think you would be compelled to go towards those kids. If you think you can handle it, the AP or IB classes (you don't have to take a full schedule of these, maybe 2 or 3) will introduce you to the most motivated students on the campus who avoid stuff like drugs.
Drugs and alcohol are most definitely a problem. We would be ignoring an issue if parents didn't acknowledge it, but if you don't want to be involved, you don't have to and most kids aren't. Plenty of kids go through all four years without every touching those types of things and are totally happy. If you want drugs though, it is there and easy to get (not encouraging you at all, this is just reality).
