Commute from Irvine to Whittier (OPINIONS NEEDED)
Hello. I will be moving to SoCal soon (hopefully). I really want to live in Irvine and, if I do, I will have to commute to Whittier two to three times per week. Is this insane? Everyone on this list seems so honest and I love that so, please, tell me if this is a crazy idea. Also, if I have to live closer to Whittier, can you suggest some cool places for a 30-something couple to live? Thanks!

You are only talking about 20 miles or so.

umm from whittier to irvine, juss hope you have a carpool with you during rush hour but that wont probably help much, it juss depends on when yer traveling cuz the 5 freeway is always packed, and the 605 and 405 junction is alrite it juss really depends but 30 minutes isnt bad, but thats without traffic going 80 miles an hour

It's not beyond reason, especially with the work on the 5 freeway not being a big mess any more from what I recall. Personally I'd look at Brea, Yorba Linda, or the nicer parts of Fullerton. VERY quick commute across Lambert (or Imperial but that's more crowded).

Irvine is really nice. When you're deciding on a commute, you should consider your quality of life. By that I mean you don't want to be 5 minutes away from work but hate where you live or you don't want to be 1 hour away from work and love where you live because you'll never be there to enjoy it. I currently live in Irvine because I love it and my commute is only 20-25 minutes opposing traffic. I would say if your commute is longer than 30 minutes then you should move closer to your job but make sure that you like the area you are moving to so you can get the best of both worlds. Someone mentioned that it was only 20 miles apart and I personally don't think that's that bad.

Thanks, folks!!!
Thank you so much, guys! I think I will still try to live in Irvine because, as Purple_2005 pointed out, I want a good quality of life. However, if it becomes too crazy I will look into the towns Sage of Sagle listed. You guys are the best.

You might want to consider looking at the homes in the Friendly Hills are of Whittier, it's gorgeous, if you can afford them, and they have some of the best schools in the state. If not, there's a lot of new housing popping up in the nicer areas of Brea and La Mirada.
Honestly, Irvine to Whittier is going to be a long commute, on a weekend with moderate traffic, it's about 45 minutes. It will be longer on a weekday during rush hour, I'd guess 1 to 1 1/2 hours, depending on how far into rush hour you are. Good luck!

Yixi,
I second Fullerton as an option. Much closer to Whittier and it has a real walkable downtown (I'm looking at you, Irvine.) I'm sure someone will flame me with a location of Irvine's downtown. Carry on.

I would have to say Brea. For a 30-something couple, Brea has a good downtown scene and a lot to offer. Its a fun place to live. Fullerton is more the college scene (Go Titans), and Yorba Linda/ Placentia is very family oriented. I wouldn't get too caught up in Irvine. Its a very nice place, but its not the only nice place in Orange County.
I guess I should've asked first, what type of lifestyle are you looking for?
