EscapeCalifornia I can't believe you posted the statistics. I wanted to be the first one to comment...good for you. The proof that we need. LOL... some of these people on this forum have their heads in the sand. It is amazing that people cannot except fact and reality. They asked for it and you delivered. Now you will probably get a response saying this page is a hoax or something

Escape, when I click on the link it says "The Page you Requested was not Found" (which seems to happen all too often with the Register). Could you let me know how Mission Viejo did with regard to crime (if it was included in the stats).

Mission Viejo -

82 violent crimes (8.62 per 10,000 people), 18.06% increase from 2006 to 2007

1313 property crimes (138.07 per 10,000 people), 5.41% decrase from 2006 to 2007

In terms of the numbers I quoted in my previous post, MV has 3.3% of the population and 1.0% of the violent crime.

All I am saying is that some of you make Santa Ana sound like the Bronx, East LA and the rough parts of Oakland.

Santa Ana still has less than the US average of crime.

I think this exaggeration of Santa Ana being some mainstream crime town, comes from the fact it is nestled in between North and South OC. If you live in a Country Club (South OC), then anything that doesn't appear to be "perfect", is exaggerated, when in actuality it is quite normal.

“The only thing that the world will not have enough of is exaggeration.”

It is all relative though, to those of you who have never been in a 'real' tough town, then Santa Ana would seem scary. But let me tell you, go for a bus ride or subway ride in the Bronx and Santa Ana seems like Disney Land. Oh and what is really tough is that people still travel in to the Bronx Zoo, but how many of you OC folks head into Santa Ana to check out Bowers Museum? I met people who lived their whole life in Irvine and have never been there, all because it is too scary.

Did you figure out the percentages on your own with the numbers on the chart? I'm not suggesting that's a problem at all, I just didn't see those particular numbers.

I think what's important to remember is not just how much crime there is in a particular city but where in the city the crimes primarily take place. So, for instance, Santa Ana may have 24% of the violent crime in the county but where does that crime happen? Is it concentrated in certain areas and virtually absent from others?

Statistics do not always give the full picture. I would not pretend to argue that there are not certain areas of Santa Ana that do not have a crime problem but there are most certainly areas of that city where crime does not run rampant. That's why a forum like this should be so helpful to people contemplating moving to any area. You can read all the statistics you want (and, yes, they are helpful in making decisions for sure!) but talking to the current residents in the area you are considering will give you a more complete view and, thus, aid in your decision making process.

It's funny how some people say that Santa Ana is a big city so of course it has some bad areas. But Santa Ana isn't it's own autonomous city. It's part of a much larger metro area. If you think of OC as a city of 3M people, then it has good areas and bad areas. Most parts of are fine and the bad areas are called Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Anaheim, and Stanton.
