Is Costa Mesa ghetto or nice?
Hi,
I might be getting a job in Costa Mesa and was wondering if it would be better to live in Irvine, Costa Mesa, or some other area? I would rather not have to commute too much but want to live in an affordable and safe nice area. Thanks!!

No way would I call Costa Mesa "ghetto." There are a few run down areas but most of it is very nice and safe.

Costa Mesa has a Maserati dealership. While it serves people other than just residents of Costa Mesa, I think you can take that as a sign that Costa Mesa is not "ghetto."

The quick answer is both - Although "Barrio" may be a better descriptor for the lower end parts then "ghetto". There are some parts of CM that are no better then Santa Ana and some that are very upscale. Generally speaking the east side of CM is better then the west (dividing line is the 55/Newport Blvd) and the Mesa Verde area on the West side has a good rep as well. If you are going to rent or buy in CM be pretty granular about your research into the neighborhoods you are looking at.
Also, as a general rule, I reccomend CM for singles, less for families. Schools are ok but not the best, some are downright bad. If you have a family or are planning on starting one & setting in some roots after this upcoming move, look elsewhere. Irvine or Huntington Beach would be the alternates for a family. Both would be less then a 30 minute commute to CM.
Lastly, if you are totally foot loose & fancy free, you could find a room rental or MIL apartment in Newport Beach & do the working beach bum thing for a year or two. My sister did it in her early 20's and remembers that time fondly. It's a uniquely california experience.

MIL = "Mother in Law" Usually reffering to a seperate studio apartment unit over a garage or part of the house segregated for the main house with a seperate entrance so a tenant can come & go w/o going into the main part of the house.
A place you can "store" your MIL w/o having her in your space all the time.

Yeah but that dealership is literally within a short walk of apartments that looks like Santa Ana. Costa Mesa is a weird city. There's no zoning or planning of any kind so everything is all just mixed in together. You'll have $1M houses right across the street from section 8 apartments, across the street from an auto body shop. Some parts are nice, some parts are trashy.

Check out an area called "Quail Hill" in Irvine, it's right off the 405 freeway which makes it about a 7 minute drive to Costa Mesa....
