"Reading this post, I can't help but to be reminded of this article I read yesterday.
http://www.businessweek.com/careers/...top+news+index" Interesting article at the end of that link, which I read in its entirety. There are some substantial differences between myself and the person with whom you would compare my statements. First off, that person was giving an opinion on LA after only being there for 1 month. I've been in OC for 7 years. Secondly, the person you compare me with claims to possess an "understanding of what is deep and what really matters in life". I make no such claims. I'm not pointing out where Nirvana 'really' is, I'm just signaling a pothole on the way to it. Let me give you a CA example of superficiality you don't find on the East Coast. I drive a 95 Ford Explorer cause it's in good shape and gets me where I want to go reliably. I wash it once a year, although I maintain the engine regularly and keep the windows spotless. The vast majority of my neighbors on the other hand perform a weekly ritual of car worship that involves extensive waxing, buffing and shining. It is usually performed after the lawn has been similarly worshipped and reverenced with the proper amounts of mowing, fertilizing and pruning. You can drive up & down the streets of OC and see almost EVERYONE engaged in the idol-worship. Sure, on the eastcoast you get Moderator cut: removed like that too, but they're NOT the norm. I believe I've made a valid statement when taken in general terms. Generalizing is NOT always wrong. For example, Moderator cut: off topic |

I owned an old car when I was in CA and it was dirty...and yet I'm a native Californian. Your generalization is silly, there is a car culture in CA. Those people worship their cars, its a sub-culture fairly unique to the west. The majority of Californians aren't part of this sub-culture.
It would help if you supported your generalizations with actual data. Also, regarding that article. You didn't get the point of it (I mean its in the title). |

What a surprise - another crybaby New Yorker who cannot utter any words other than "Everything's betta in New York."
You all need to move back to NY and stop annoying the rest of us. And for the record, I'm from the NYC area and sorry but it doesn't compare with Newport Beach. I'm never going back to that filth hole. |

If you want a real car culture, try living in Metro Detroit. It's rare to see a car that is older than three years old around here 'cause it's the Motor City, you know? LOL
My car doesn't define me, however. Also, I tend not to be friends with my neighbors anyway. I don't have kids, etc. I hang out with people with similar interests to mine. I prefer a quiet neighborhood where people keep to themselves ![]() BTW, I'm moderately liberal and I find the OC to be very open-minded. Sure, most people vote Republican, but they are open-minded. I always enjoy my many trips to Orange County. I'm amazed constantly at how friendly people are as well as the value placed on family, etc. I could care less about the wealth or the display of it. If people are happy with who they are and their lifestyle, who am I to judge? Whatever floats your boat, as they say ![]() Regarding the initial post here...IMHO using swear words and fighting words just shows a lack of command of the English language ![]() |

To the thread starter, can you answer this for yourself?"
Why is it that lots of NY'ers always have something negative to say about Cali? And why is it that most Californian's really don't care about NY? |

To the OP: How can you expect to like it here or have people want to talk with you to build friendships when you speak this way? It's not considered a good thing to be arrogant, opinionated, and rude here unlike in NYC. I went there several times for business and to visit a friend. It was apalling to me how you'd go miles seeing nothing green, nothing but buildings so tall you couldn't see the sky. But most astonishing of all was how extremely rude people were there and how proud of being so they seemed to be! I'm sorry if this comes out like a personal criticism of you, but really. CA and NY are like polar opposites. And I, for one, am so glad for that. To each his own.

To the OP...
You will find what you're looking for anywhere you go. You WANT to see the ugliness and the shallowness here in OC, so you've found it. Newsflash- there are stupid, shallow, boring, rude, materialistic, self-centered people everywhere you go. Moderator cut: personal/off topic If you hate Orange County, it's probably because you're homesick, and nobody can blame you for loving where you're from. That's what's so great about this country- there are so many choices. It sounds like you belong in NY. |
