On the diversity question, it'd be more telling to see the demos for different parts of OC. Is an area really diverse if 90% of one city is white and another is that much Latino?

When I lived there, I seem remember seeing Newport Beach listed as 97% white. Am I wrong about that?

But that's just Newport Beach. Certain pockets like NB and Santa Ana have a racial dominance. Santa Ana is THE most latino city in the country. Even LA doesn't have a city with such a Latino dominance. But then you have the majority of OC that includes Tustin, Anaheim, Westminster, Orange, that have a diverse mix of people.

Hey, magnifico--how bout them Yankees?

Seriously, there are positives and negatives everywhere you go. I used to live in OC, now in NH. Guess what? I like it better here, but for different reasons (and none of it has to do with the "NY attitude").

Yes, the place is physically beautiful and very spacious but in exchange you get southern californians. These people are the most shallow, slow-witted, materialistic and uncultured people you could hope to meet (outside of Texas of course). It's a 100% freakin' car-culture which means these Moderator cut: removed never get a chance to practice and hone any significant social skills due to the fact that they rarely interact with other human beings. Hot topics in these parts?. The weather!, which BTW is constantly sunny and gets to be a Moderator cut: removedDRAG after the initial euphoria of it wears off. Gimme a freakin' cloud every now & then somebody PLEASE!.

These people have ZERO sense of humor and lack the wit that God gave the common field asparagus. My theory is that the constant sunshine fades the brain and renders people tanned Moderator cut: removed.

Cosmetic details are of the UTMOST importance here & silicone enhancements are a MUST for woman. Speaking of Cali woman, they're mostly greedy, dimwitted moneychasing blonds and the California woman is in general like plastic fruit; nice to look at ..but flavorless and inedible.

I just went back East after a long absence and felt like I was freakin' ALIVE again. The diversity, the action, the odors (good & bad) the edgy humor, the streetsmart people, the culture ...THAT'S LIFE !

I'm packing it up and heading back to civilization man!!!!

My grandmother thinks CA sucks too!! Her daughter-my godmother lives in Snta Cruz. She really hates CA being shes lived in NJ her entire life. She told me, how all the yards have brick walls, everything is brown, and how people are basically afraid of other human beings. Nobody sits on their porch and god forbid you sit on yours and waved to the person across the street, they won't know how to reacte. She was walking my aunts dog one day and said, "Hello", to one of the neighbors and they ladies face turned white as a ghost and she ran in the house.

This is a total crock of b.s. I'm from NJ and I can tell you, having lived in several states, that it's the rudest and most unfriendly place ever, with the possible exception of Scottsdale, Arizona. NJ people are all so miserable and unhappy and they let you know.

Maybe 50 years ago in your grandmother's time it may have been friendly, but so was every other place back then. Society was just different overall.

Having lived in NJ, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Scottsdale, I can say that Newport Beach is BY FAR the friendliest and most outgoing bunch of people I've ever met! It's hard to go outside in the evening without running into a bunch of the neighbors having beers out in their front yards or winding up at a neighbor's house barbecuing. And even outside our neighborhood we find it to be very outgoing.

At least if people want to trash the area out of envy, come up with something that's true.

How many newer homes (ie homes in CA) have actual porches with rocking chairs & hammocks like the older row homes in NJ?

besides, with the yr round weather in CA and especially in Santa Cruz, why would anyone want to be on a porch when they could be anywhere else all yr round?

I remember when I went to college overseas. Students from the east coast had this bias toward me & other Californians for reasons I didn't know at first. I couldn't care less about the bias (some could call it ignorant envy) nor could care less about any differences between us. Anyways, one of the Easterners, a prep school kid whom I befriended eventually, ended up in NorCal, quit his NY banking job cold w/o any offers elsewhere.

Anyways, My friends who relocated East, and I have grown to expect some sort of reaction from NY & rest of the that area's people when we let them know we're from Cali.
Very amusing to say the least.

Although I don't agree with a lot of the stuff on this thread because it is so generalized, I read that from the 2000 census, OC was appx 64% white, 30% hispanic Latino, 14% of other races, and a very small % of Asian, Black, and Pacific Islander. Yes this is from 2000, but even aside from the statistics, an area is not diverse just because i'ts not white...it's diverse if it's made up of many different kinds of people. And it's true...for anyone who's spent any time in NYC, OC doesn't really compare in diversity...in my opinion.
