I can list some places in South County, if you're interested. However, I have no idea if they serve them the way you described.

You asked for a really good burrito. When you ask a question like that, the responses will come from people who like authentic food. Authentic mexican would be the food on the carts on the street, Tacos Mexico, etc. Those are low end, but I'm sure there are nicer places that serve authentic mexican.

Same thing happens when someone asks for good chinese and lists PF Changs as their favorite chinese place. Its not authentic at all. Go to China and you will never find the stuff thats on PF Chang's menu.

However, I like food like you do....americanized. PF Changs is dominant, authentic Chinese is just plain horrible. Authentic Mexican is just ok. Americanized Mexican is delicious....Burritos stuffed with lettuce, tomato, cheese, guacamole, etc.

I'm sorry to say I don't know enough about OC to make a recommendation there. Its been about 10 year or more, but for a fast food burrito like you are looking for, I really used to like Uncle Robbys in Montebello and they have another restaurant in Whitter called Tio something or other. I also really used to like the HUGE burrito at Leo's in Redondo Beach(says Lawdale, but its south of Manhatten Beach Bl).

Uncle Robby's - Montebello CA - BooRah

Yaqui's Tacos has the best meat around. They are in the Costco FV shopping center. I think they use skirt/flat steak cooked on their own wood fired grill. The tacos are big and a little expensive but they are mouth watering and fantastic. Not sure if they make burritos but does it really matter if you get the ingredients you like. Just roll them up and pretend!

I'll second Taco Mesa. They have a few locations as well, Chapman in Orange, 19th St in Costa Mesa, and more.

Taco Mesa has won awards for best burrito in the west from Sunset Magazine and best fast food restaurant & best mexican restaurant in OC from OC Weekly

My favorite burrito is the blackened fish burrito from Baja Fish on Bristol. Nothing at all like it here in the Chicago suburbs. :-(

Taco Mesa is great. If you want an amazing full service restaurant, go to Taco Rosa (that is the full service parent restaurant of Taco Mesa) off San Miguel in Newport, outstanding. They also have another location at the Marketplace Irvine off Jamboree. The Calderon family are great people and are great participants in the community.
