Anybody know where I can find a job without having to go through a background check? I am an ex con (with robbery in my rap sheet) and I am ready to prove to society that I am a changed man ready to be a part of society again.

Or can anyone refer me to a friend or family that has a small business that can help me out. Thanks guys.

I am sure you have already determined that there is a serious lack of resources for ex-offenders in OC and LA County. I'm not sure why, because this area has a large demographic of people that need these services. I find it commendable that you wish to put forth the effort to move away from what happened in the past. Unfortunately, even after doing your time, ex-offenders are hampered by a "life sentence" when attempting to find employment.

I do not know of any employers that specifically will bypass a background check, but there are a small handful of resources that may assist you.

Friends Outside is an organization that assist former offenders with employment issues and other resources. They have an outreach through St. Vincent De Paul in Santa Ana, I believe. The phone # listed is (714) 991-9255. They may be able to point you in a direction to obtain employment.

Your local California One Stop, operated by the Employment Development Department may be able to assist as well. They have a center in Westminster, Santa Ana, Irvine and elsewhere in OC.

Check with The Salvation Army in your area for any resources they may have. Many of the branches of that organization have re-entry programs.

The Orange County Sheriff has provided an online resource of a handful of providers with the Re-Entry Partnership of Orange County. The list is mostly shelter and chemical dependency resources, but it may help you determine if there is anything available to assist you. ocreentry.com

And to Roogy, I would suggest that you educate yourself about the significant problems that former offenders and parolees face because of the lack of resources for them, while in custody and when they get out. Other states in our nation have developed programs to assist them because it works in detering former offenders from returning to prison. California has no real re-entry/rehabilitative programs which exceedingly contributes to the recidivism issue that is a crisis in the California prison system. This state with the highest rate of incarceration, has done virtually nothing to solve the problem. Unfortunately, the state does wish to establish these programs, but there is no money.

To the OP, I hope all works out for you. It's a very rough time to looking for employment. I'm doing the same

Why hide ? A backround check would be a great opportunity to learn to be honest. Being honest on an application would be a change. I would encourage you to go through the process of the legitimate job process. I wish you well in your journey to being a changed man.

I had a very good friend in college with this issue. I used to feel the same way as you until I got to know him - he struck out time and time again for work as he had a record for commercial burglary.

He ended up living with his parents and spending 7 years in school, walked out with a master's degree, became a social worker. Smart guy - spent 7 years hanging with kids (like me at the time) enjoying life; by the time he applied for work, he didn't have to claim his felony. Worked out well for him, but he had parental support as a grown man.

You could always join the military if you had no other opportunities.

I can't refer you but I do know that many smaller businesses simply don't do background checks. They're stingy and just believe in hiring based on the interview. But good references certainly help in those situations.

It's all based on the severity of the crime. If it is determined to be a waiverable crime, then yes they will take them. However, it's all handled on a case by case basis. Now that the military is dealing with too many people trying to join due to the economy. I am doubtful as to if a felon could get a waiver. Anything is possible I suppose.
