Edwards is right on the OC/LA/Kern [is that the county name?] borders, correct? Are there any towns north of the base that may be better than the ones in the South?

Oh, the San Gabriels. Isn't there a valley where people live? Or maybe I've heard different. Sorry, I don't know Cali very well...

Ah, I was actually thinking Orange County because I thought it was the closest county to the base. :S

My dad doesn't want me going to any of the Lancaster/Palmdale/Rosamond schools. From what he's heard from his friends that were transferred out to Cali themselves with kids, they say public school basically shouldn't be an option.
Yep, it's really that far. Edwards is in a spectacular area if you think desert might be interesting (I actually think it is).

Edwards is in SE Kern County, north of Los Angeles County and west of San Bernardino County (SB County is actually much larger than CT). Orange County is nowhere near.

The San Gabriel Valley is south of the San Gabriel Mountains, the High Desert (including Edwards) is north of the San Gabriel Mountains. The SGV would also be a place to not commute from.

North of the base is California City and North Edwards, to the west is Mojave, and to the east is Boron. California City is a fragmented patchwork of cheap tract homes that never really materialized into an actual town. North Edwards from what I know is mostly large cheap rural properties/mobile homes. I've never been to Boron, but it's likely a run of the mill desert small town. Mojave is a truck stop town, with train tracks/billboards/fast food, etc.

I don't know where all this negativity regarding the schools comes from. My girlfriend attended middle school in Rosamond, and she liked it. I've known people that have gone to Mojave and Lancaster schools as well and many of them have gone on to college, and all seemed to have nothing less than the typical "American High School" experience.

It's up to your family to decide where you're going to live, if Dad wants to commute a ridiculous distance to work so you can have a "better" education, than that's up to him. If he's willing to sacrifice an hour plus in the car so you can go to an "8" school instead of a "6" school, then more power to him.

Actually, you guys could probably live a nice exurban/rural lifestyle somewhere out there if you gave the nearby areas a good look.

Either way, I wish you the best of luck.
