I know I already added my two cents, but I find it amazing that people are saying to stay away from Costa Mesa! I lived there for 5 years and not only did I feel completely safe, but I loved it. Just my opinion...plus you can find a one bedroom for less than $1300 a month (and that's not on the west side). Check out Seawind Apartments. I used to live there and I would highly recommend them.

I would prefer Costa Mesa. It's a fun and funky little city with lots to do. It has some dicey areas but, unfortunately, the more interesting cities usually do.

They are both in Orange county. Anywhere in OC is going to be expensive. the up side is both areas have lots to do, i do not think you will be disappointed with either choice.

Costa Mesa is fine! I don't understand why people over react on the criminal aspect of certain cities. Of course there is a block or two with really bad people in it, but its few and far between! Just use common sense on how the neighborhood you will move into looks, and that is that!

haha, i just realized this is an old thread. I wonder what clueless1 decided on?

Lived in both cities...Lake Forest is nicer than Costa Mesa for sure...but Costa Mesa itself is not that bad, there are FAR worse neighborhoods in LA/OC. West Costa Mesa near the DMV is a tad bit rundown but I didn't have any problems, it's not exactly ritzy but I wouldn't really classify it as an unsafe neighborhood since it's very close to the 55 and quite busy with through traffic.

Lake Forest is a very boring city, residential and family oriented. Costa Mesa has a much more vibrant nightlife so pick accordingly.

dangerous? you've got to be kidding me, this is laughable. I've walked on 19th st. at 12am and hardly felt any danger. There are a few bums here and there but they seemed harmless.

But then again I have been to cities like Lima and Rio de Janiero in South America where people risk being shot at the turn of dusk by criminals who want to steal $5 so my view of what constitutes "dangerous" may be different.

This thread was started 5/2007

I'm assuming the OP has already made a decision about where to live. I guess there may be other people may be pondering the same question though.

Interesting bump.

uhhhh costa mesa is drug,gang,ghetto-land compared to LF, but thats just comparing the two, once ur in CM you will love it thers alot to do, bomb mexican food, close to the beach, just be careful because there are two sides to the story... costa mesa can be good or bad, depends on who you surround yourself with. yes there are gangs, drugs, violence, but there are also nice people, and fun activities. just be careful.
