California doesn't have a warm ocean. The warmest would probably be in late summer. This has been a very rainy winter but I don't think its been particularly cold.

What do you consider warm? It's warm compared to, say, surfing in Santa Cruz.....wet suits must be worn up north all year long....brrrr...
Laguna is warmer than, say, the Ventura area.....
It's cold compared to areas further south in Mexico.....
It's cold compared to Hawaii...

The water is always going to be colder during winter..... Late summer is your best bet for warmer water around Laguna...... It might be a tad warmer around Oceanside during late summer, I dunno.....

The best waves are around San Clemente and Huntington Beach for the most part....

P.S. except for the burned out areas which might have landslides, we are glad for the rainy weather because of the drought......try not to be so annoyed.....

Get yourself a wet suit. Warmest water is in summer but doesn't get much above high 60s. South swells are generally also a summertime pheonomenon. Things will be better once you get past June gloom, usually around the 4th of July.
