I was about to say the same...

Now to throw a wrench in the conversation, how is Huntington Beach for raising a family? I understand it becomes a hot spot for nightlife in the summertime. Are there nice areas far enough away from the main street that are family friendly?
My parents live in HB and I have to drive across the entire city from the 405 to get to their place. Its a little less than a mile north of the downtown area.

As I was leaving tonight a little after 11pm, I noticed how quiet everything was. Really quiet. And most of the lights in the houses were out. As I was driving back to the 405, I noticed how few business were opened. I stopped at a gas station, and then at a 7-11 for some coffee. And really that was about it. Heading over there everything had been really bustling at around 6pm. By 11pm, it was absolutely dead. I think Beach Bl and the immediate downtown area have activity. Everywhere else is pretty quiet. Huntington Beach has a population of almost 200,000, and relatively few apartments for a city that size. As a consequence, its pretty big in terms of land size. Also as a consequence, there are lots and lots of areas that are just houses, and as such are quiet and isolated from the downtown area.

If you're still interested in Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente area: I have an eighth grade daughter and we live in Laguna Niguel. We have been looking for where to send her to high school. For public schools, we are considering Aliso Niguel and San Juan Hills. All of the schools around here are crowded, with over 3,000 kids at each. Dana, Aliso, and SC have been around for a while, and San Juan Hills is the newest. San Juan Hills is such a gorgeous school, not as crowded as the rest, the academics and athletics are great, etc. Also, there are some really beautiful parts of San Juan Capistrano that would remind you of Texas :-) (our family used to live in west Plano in Willowbend.. we miss it. The school's in Texas are better than CA schools). I have to admit that it is pretty intimidating as a parent walking around SC, Aliso, or Dana's campus..
