My favorite thing from Pickup Stix is the House Special Chicken Lunch Special for $6.99 (though recently they had a $1.00 off special promotion, which I took advantage of).

I've discovered a long time ago that the best Chinese restaurants to dine in were the ones that had lots of Chinese people as customers, and the menus are written in both English and Chinese.

Two of my favorite spots.

I really love Nick's Pizza, (corner of Harbor and Wilson, behind Chuck E. Cheese, in Costa Mesa) though I liked the old place before they redid that shopping center.
The pizza there is my favorite.
I wouldn't quite call it "cheap", but it's certainly not expensive.

My parents live in Irvine and keep going on and on about First Class Pizza, so we had some yesterday and it was damned good. Great cheese.
There are a few locations, Irvine, Orange, Newport to name a few

Robertitos on 19th and Placentia in Costa mesa is carne asada heaven.
they're open 24 hours, too.

In n Out burgers, an obvious choice, but had to say it

Here's some for the list...

Italian - always going to be Maggiano's for me (but it is always packed and pricey....great food though - order it for pick up and save time!)

Thai - Thai Dining, Laguna Niguel (on Greenfield)

Pizza - NY's Upper Crust Pizza, Laguna Niguel (also on Greenfield)

Mexican - El Mariachi, San Clemente (you have got to try their Huevos Rancheros....awesome!) Also Las Golandrinas (locations in SC and SJC) for a quick bite. They've got great mini-burritos.

Chinese - there are two good places in San Clemente that are reasonable - China Well on Camino de los Mares and Mandarin Garden which is off Camino Real.

BBQ - Bad to the Bone, San Juan Capistrano (and their logo is cute - a pig in a chefs hat!) They also have a local beer available there - Capistrano Brewing Company (I think that is the name...).

Sushi - Kabuki, Huntington Beach (avocado rolls - yum!)

Now I'm getting hungry...

Japanese-Kappo Honda in Fountain Valley...they're open until 2am so it's a good place for drinks. Not much of a place for kids, most of the customers and all the staff are Japanese.

Chinese- Lucky Chinese in Fountain Valley(take out joint, but has tables)...killer food at a great price.

You gotta go to BEECHWOOD BBQ on Main Street in Seal Beach. It is the BEST!!!! It's a tiny place, but they are in the process of expanding. The brisket is to die for!!!!! They have pulled pork, chicken, great side dishes too. My husband loves the fried pickles!! I love their sweet pototoe fries and their cole slaw . They have amazingly good deserts too. One of our fav places here in Seal. I know this isn't the area you were looking for, but a great place to come and walk on the pier after dinner.
