I grew up in Rossmoor which is an unincorporated neighborhood at the very northern tip of OC. The Los Alamitos school district serves this area and was considered to be very good when I went there (late 80's, early 90's). I don't know how well the district is rated now (I'm sure its still decent if not excellent), but I'd highly recommend you check into it. If you have the financial means, look into Rossmoor as it is a great area to raise a family and is about as close as you can get to LAX and still be in OC.

I was planning on asking about a flex schedule, but the vanpool would be a great option as well. I would think they would be pretty plentiful heading into LA.

Sort of an older thread but for the benefit of future readers I'll add some info. I am using a vanpool from Laguna Hills Mall to El Segundo. Leave at 5:10AM, arrive ES 6AM - zero traffic. Leave ES 330PM, arrive LHM 430PM or on a bad day 500PM - barely any traffic M-W, some on Thursdays. (On Fridays we leave ES at 2 or 230 so there is no traffic on Friday - typically the worst day of the week for normal commute time.) Cost is about $125/month (I was spending $20/day for gas driving alone) and we really whip by people by using the car pool lanes. "Mr. Cheap" bought a 3G air card for my laptop so I can visit all the good traffic sites real time in the van if needed.

Finally, I am going to buy a junker car to keep at work so I can drive out to Hawthorne pool and swim at lunch or run errands if I need to.

Vanpool is the way to go.
