It depends on you.

When we lived at the beach (1 block away) we went to the beach every day. Usually we just went for a walk on the beach after dinner. But guests would not visit us because parking was so bad. When we moved about 20 minutes away from the beach, my wife and kids went about 10 -15 times a year. I rarely went. I like the mountains better. Parking is such a hassle that it is often not worth it. However I am not a sit and do nothing type. I need to be doing things all the time

Plus the coast near Laguna Niguel/Dana Point is so polluted that some days it smells like a mixture of sewage and fish.

We lived in 5 different houses in Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills & Wagon Wheel near Coto de Caza. The beach was about 20-30 minutes away and we probably went a dozen times a year. It was just hard to find time with everyone working and the kids' activities.

As for A/C, only one house in MV needed A/C. It was a small house on top of a hill and just fried inside when the sun hit. All the others were bigger, had large roofs that kept out the heat, with shade trees and breezes. Even in the canyon where it was definitely 10-15 degrees warmer than the beach, we got enough breeze to keep the house comfortable without A/C.

Take a ride down the street that I mentioned and end it at the harbor, say, mid-August or better yet, over Labor Day weekend....if you think the temp at the Spectrum area is just a handful of degrees different than at the harbor, well....hmmmmm....forget the charts...wait until the fog rolls in...but it won't roll in very far.......

I live in Laguna Niguel, however, I am one street over from the Dana Point city limits and at the end of the block lies San Juan...... It is always hotter at the other end of Laguna Niguel bordering on Laguna Hills......so maybe it all depends on where they measure the temps......

Mission Viejo is up against the freeway, (Borders, Toys R Us, etc. are in Mission Viejo even though people think it should be Laguna Hills), but it also goes quite a distance inland.....Irvine is the same. Part of Irvine borders along the Newport Coast development and gets a few ocean breezes......inland does not receive the same breezes.....

Our beaches are very crowded during summer days......people escape inland heat by visiting the beach.....

It's obvious that we need to agree that we disagree here.

I think its more a factor of how much free time and energy you have. I lived in Huntington Harbor, about .5 miles from the beach for two years, and never went! Before that, I lived 1 mile further down the same street (so a total of about 1.5 miles away) for three years and I still never went! During this time, I was a college student at a university and working full time. Then, I moved to Tustin, and started a business. Last summer I was at the beach at least 2 days a week (its about a 15 min drive, maybe 12 or 13 miles away if you look at a map). I just had more free time, and I was able to take off when I wanted mid-day for beach trips. When I lived closer to the beach, I didn't have time for it...and when I did- I was too lazy to take a bike ride, etc. at the beach. So, it really depends on your lifestyle and how much time you have and how flexible your time is, IMO.

It does depend on where you live, agreed.

I know the area where you live, I've been to that area a few times. I can't stand the fish and sewage smell though. The water is too polluted around there. I'd actually rather live in 20-30 degree hotter weather than smell that all day.
