If you feel you're not wanted, there are plenty of other nice places to stay in OC - and they'll appreciate your business. Any particular reason you stay in HB? Sounds like Newport may be more to your liking.

my company has an agreement with the Hilton in HB so we always stay there... and since it's 2 blocks from main street we typically head there for dinner or drinks.. I think I'll just travel the 10 mins to Newport from now on though

Depends on your crowd. The Peninsula in Newport is typically a beach bar crowd, but definitely a little more "proper" than the Huntington Beach crowd. Corona Del Mar (south end of Newport, actually is a part of NB) is generaly where the "yuppie" bars are, and the type that I frequent the most (unless I'm at the beach, at least on the Peninsula). CdM is generally the area south of the inlet until you start hitting Newport Coast. Newport Coast is entirely residential, and easy to spot... tough to go that far past CdM.

Since HB is my hometown, I'm sorry you've had bad experiences here. Keep in mind one thing- lots of the douchebags you see in downtown bars do not actually live in HB. While surfers can be very territorial of their waves and do NOT like outsiders, the beach area attracts a lot of people from Fontucky and various other points inland.

Nice hotel. My wedding reception was there.

Try heading down to the Fashion Island area or out onto the newport pennisula. You'll find a more receptive crowd there.
