I live in AZ now so I'm used to the sun -- too much sun here. Nonetheless, I'm worried how I would adapt to living in Oregon. I'd like to live in Portland or on the coast -- with some sunshine
![]() I lived in San Francisco and really had the best of all worlds there -- minus the cost of living and my commute. I briefly lived in Portland for a couple of months back in the mid 80s, but that's not a good measure of what it's really like to live there. AZ is just not for me. Thanks. |

Thanks, what about southern OR? I now in the east part of the state there is sun.
Maybe Seattle would be a better choice, as I hear that even in the area there are little places to be had with more sunshine. |

I've heard many folks saying there's more cloudy days in Seattle than in Portland, but Portland has more rain.

Movin'on, as I mentioned in another post we too are moving from Arizona (Tucson) to Oregon. We lived in Bend before it became popular and dreaded the Winters and felt very isolated which is why we will stay West of the Cascades this time around. The grey overcast days concern us most, only 77 days of sunshine a year! Does anyone know how this is calculated? If it is a marine layer that burns off in the early afternoon that's ok but the rainy drizzle and dark overcast sky day after day in Seattle was not good and we moved from there to Arizona very quickly. Hopefully Salem won't have too much of this. I was told that the Portland area has lots of mini climates so more local research has to be done...don't know how true this is.

Dear Freedom,
Your statement "Sun in Portland is like snow in Maui.." How about sun in Ashland or Grants Pass....? |

i have read that portland & seattle average 45 inches of rain per yr & less then 100 days of sunshine.i like the rain & cloudy days but thats just too much for me.i prefer a variety of weather.unfortunately in so.ca its mostly dry from may-oct & its very hot inland.so.colo is most likely my next residence.

The best I am able to explain our weather is a true 4 seasons......there are some yrs that are pretty strange, where any of those seasons can reflect their extremes, but for the consistent years a true 4 seasons. Coming from So. Cal. and having 1 1/2 seasons, I prefer the 4 anyday. The variety and sometimes unpredictable nature keeps you on your toes. I take it as a great adventure and challenge when the weather catches me off guard. freedom |
