Weed is in Northern California. It's an old timber town, likely named because it's on the edge of the desert. As far as place names, I like Drain and Elkton, and then we have a Santa Clara and an Oakland. The most expensive town is the city of Sucker Lake - renamed by the ancient developers to Lake Oswego, the better to sell lots.

Boy that would really freak me out about Oregon.
What kind of hell do we live in?
I'm moving.

He is making negative comments on every Oregon thread. Clearly he just needs to move somewhere else that makes him happy.

Default Yep - that be Oregon

I can understand why folks want to pull up the bridge after they get settled here; no one wants to find paradise, only to have it trampled by a herd of like-seekers.

That being said, Eugene is not for everyone. The job opportunities are slim because of the University--many graduates want to stay and are willing to be paid less (well, not willing, but that's what it takes sometimes) in order to live here. Don't be surprised if your mail-person, grocery clerk and hairdresser have bachelor's degrees or even a masters. Home prices, while not at the level of CA, are not cheap -- the going median is in the $230,000 range for a ranch-style home. It doesn't rain all the time, but winters are gray and overcast. Many folks suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder).

Yet residents are friendly, well-read, more liberal than not, very family-oriented and environmentally conscious. The surrounding area is beautiful and green year-round. Lots of outdoor sports to partake in, plus summer concerts in the park, bike-riding path and trails galore, good restaurants, hiking venues -- it's just really a great place to live. Clean and not crime-ridden, although, of course, there is a crime quotient. Tie-dye t-shirts are always in style here....
Well put -- and my experirence in Portland was very similar. Just a really great place to live. Although having a good income means greater opportunity to experience the best the area has to offer, you can still enjoy a very rewarding lifestyle on lower income because there are so many things to do that are free or low cost and lots of friendly people to do them with -- hiking, local music, great art of all kinds, the ocean, farmers markets, mountains, waterfalls, libraries, parks, excellent public transportation, roller-derby(), the list goes on and on...

Getting internet in the wilds of Oregon is a real problem. There are still large areas where dialup or satellite are your only choices. I know what you mean by odd questions and attitudes, though. Urban tree huggers apparently can't grasp that trees grow, and you have to keep cutting them or they take over the place.

My family and I are suppose to be moving to Oregon ( Salem or Keizer) within a few month. After reading some of the posts about Oregon, am starting to get worried. Worried about crime rate and the education. Oregon is truly a beautiful state but should I be over-stressing on these issues??

without reading the rest of the posts here, I would not move because some conspiracy nut is screaming doomsday, nor would I not live where I wanted because something 'might' happen. Always wanted to visit Oregon and potentially live there myself. Crime rate, number of minorities (I'm a realist who looks at crime stats not a racist per sae) and quality of education system might to me be more of a factor to me.

Thanks, my husband says I OVER-WORRY.. Right now we are in Jersey (which I HATE) Me being from the south, Jersey was never home. We have a few friends that live there but I wanted other people's opinions also. I love the fact that in Oreon there is so much stuff to do outdoors. Going from the Jersey education system (which is pretty good) to my kids going into the ones in Oregon, wanted to see how they were out there

Ok my turn, my husband and I are also planning to move to Oregon, (southern area). Not exactly sure yet, but thinking Roseburg, Grants Pass, however we just found this great little house in Drain. So reading all these forums are interesting, it brings up questions that I have. Fill me in on the motorcycle riding? Are there many riders out there? My husband I each have our own Harley's and love to ride, we can ride year round here in Florida which is really nice, helmet free I might add.

Regarding careers, I am a nurse and my husband is a truck driver, are there possible job oppertunities waiting for us in the areas I mentioned above? Guess, I have asked a few questions that should get this forum started. Thanks for your comments in advance. Mr and Mrs Gman!
