Eugene seems to have alot of property crime buit that's about it. It's not a dangerous city.
Don't let Oregon scare you.

I agree. I was just in Eugene and Corvallis a few weeks ago. I really like this area and I am VERY PICKY!! It's clean with friendly people. Most of the crime that was being reported in the newspapers & in the news was in Portland. There is crime everywhere. You can't run from it. But I don't think this area has high numbers of it like others I have been in.
I hope you have visited this area yourself before you passed judgement???
Don't believe everything you read. You have to experiece it for yourself.

I think your problem is going to be culture shock rather than schools. I could kid you that Oregon schools don't need fences because they have buildings with actual walls and doors. School children are pretty well supervised. I don't think schools have lost any children. However, the real reason schools don't need fences is that they rarely let children go outside.
Primary schools in Oregon do pretty well on test scores. It's the secondary schools that fall down. When the kids reach puberty, the schools lose a lot of them, and fences aren't going to solve the problem. The dropout rate is high, and the number of kids, particularly boys, going on to college is dropping. Because of budget cuts, many schools do not offer Physical Education or recess. The resulting confinement is guaranteed to drive boys crazy, and creates a hostile learning environment for them. There is a political move afoot to change that. Cross your fingers.

That is in every city. One school can be great and the other a few blocks away can have lower numbers.
Why do they need to be completely fenced. You have to remember this area is not the Bay Area or LA. They don't all need to be completely fenced. I just got back from 6000 road trip and I can tell the majority of the schools out there are not fully fenced.

Oregon So Cal
Yes, Southern Californnia is definitely much safer than Eugene. Eugene in the Detroit of the West Coast. Avoid it at all costs.

You can't be serious?
Have you looked at crime statistics for So. CA. vs. Eugene?

Completely ridiculous statement. Factually, completely wrong. Problem with sites like this is stupid statements like the above.
Who would ever consider Eugene the "Detroit" of the west coast? Jobs are plentiful, the area is growing, and it is has beautiful surroundings. The climate is great, and most who live there would not live anywhere else.

Panic not
His comment about crime in Eugene being worse than So Cal was just a ploy to deter hoards of Southern Californians from seeking a more peaceful and beautiful life in the Pac NW. Not, of course, that we have anything against Southern Californians. We love them! But, we might be a wee bit put off by replicante subdivisions springing up everywhere, urban sprawl, traffic jams, population pressures, etc.

I think this cats trying to keep Cali's from moving to OR. I live in gang central Los Angeles (one of them) & Eugene is as outwardly boring as can be. Not saying it is but doesn't seem like much is happening outside of U of O. Now coming from where I live within a block from : a murder, carjacking & near daily drug dealing, etc. Meth? You haven't seen meth until you've been to Antelope Valley.
Thous Oaks is nice ($$$) but so is Central OR. consider there is a reason why so many suburbanite Calis are moving to OR.

Another typical Oregonian who thinks their town and state is the worst.
Southern California has some of the safest and most dangerous places in the nation.
