I am considering a move to the southern coast of Oregon next summer. I read most of the posts there now - so offer the following and ask advise : I am raising two small grandchildren, ages 7 and 10, and are on a pension income. We have family in central California so want to be near them. I love the ocean but worry about the rain...is it really that bad and is it overcast much of the winter?

Depends on your definition of "bad." But expect more days to have at least a drizzle and/or to be overcast by far then there to be sunny days.

If you don't like rain and overcast then avoid the coast. Maybe the Medford or Grants Pass area would be better for you.

There would also be more activities for the grandkids.

Brookings' weather isn't that bad. I am less sure it's a good place to raise little ones, due to the aged population and lack of activities (unless you love outdoor stuff).

1. Brookings is not a good place for kids.
2. Brookings is nowhere near Central California (it would be any all-day drive, anyway)
3. Retirement Places Rated listed Brookings-Harbor as the cloudiest location of all locations in the U.S. that they rated.
4. There are far better places in Oregon than Brookings for those on fixed incomes. It's cheaper than most of coastal California, but it's still expensive by PNW standards.

Those who prefer chilly weather year round and put an unusually high premium on avoiding warm weather at all costs will tell you the climate is good in Brookings. Those of us who prefer temperate weather are wearing out Hwy. 199 up to Grants Pass most of the year in search of something that resembles spring, summer and fall (winter is the one season that's actually better on the coast).
