Yeah. There's a reason we have the term "sunbreaks". I think most people in other regions have never heard of it. It means a little bit of sun in between the overcast, and it really is nice, if that's all you'll get for a while. I'm not being facetious--it's reality on the western edge of WA and OR, for about half the year. I do like western Oregon a lot, but puerco is right on. Grants Pass, Medford and Ashland are nice.

Best of luck to you, cutecouple!

Coos Bay has fast cable internet available from Charter. There is a college and many internet-based businesses there.

Also, Coos Bay is the only place you mentioned that is actually close to the beach. The valley areas of Southern Oregon are not close or accessible to the beach. For instance, to get from Grants Pass to Gold Beach (directly west of Grants Pass) it takes nearly 3 hours because you have to drive down to California, west and then North again to get to the coast. The Coast Range and Siskiyou Mountains are treacherous and have few crossings where people occasionally get stranded and die in the winter.

There are no large cities in Southern Oregon, period. Medford is medium sized, but desert-like, smoggy and far from the coast.

"good" areas: Mingus Park, Milner Crest, Telegraph Hill areas in Coos Bay, all of Ashland, Beach Loop in Bandon

Low income/high crime: Empire and Bunker Hill areas of Coos Bay, Medford, Powers, Coquille, Myrtle Point, Myrtle Creek, Roseburg

I would recommend Eugene, although its not considered a part of Southwestern Oregon.

I'm considering a move to southern Oregon, also. I'll have to wait for the economy, in general, to improve. So I can get a fair price for my home here in Tonto Basin. I wanted to move to Oregon for years after visiting Crater Lake and camping throughout the state with my children and grandchilren. My son lived here in Arizona and beged me to move here for retirement. I did and miss the Northwest something awful. I read these posts to get a little inspiration.

Default Rural Coastal area

I was looking into Brookings, OR as my new area of relocation as soon as my Missouri home sells. After reading the post above, I must say Powers sounds wonderful to me. I'm a country girl so I do appreciate some seclusion and great neighbors both. Sounds like: Paradise. I appreciate the information even though I'm not the one who asked for it.
I find this forum very interesting and informative. Thank you to everyone!

I drive to Coos Bay from Las Vegas during the summer to get away from the heat. I love the weather
on the coast in the summer and all the outdoor activities. I would move to Coos Bay/Northbend in a
heartbeat if my wife would agree. So far, she loves it here in Las Vegas.

If you don't need to work and you can handle a one hour drive into town to shop on a narrow back road, Power's would be good for you. I like Power's, but Medical needs would keep me from living there.

*Interesting and thanks for the update. This is the input I need. Thanks Steve.
In the meantime, I'm a searching fool. Any suggestions on good web sites that show land or small acreage properties for sale from Coos Bay area down to Brookings?
